Scion tc: Keep your sunroof closed

Post by ColonelPanic »

http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000873064107/Quote »Toyota announces Scion tC “Special Service Campaign”Posted Oct 19, 2005, 5:00 PM ET by Stuart WatermanScion tCIf you drive a tC, keep the moonroof closed for a while. Toyota is launching a voluntary Special Service Campaign to upgrade the moonroof wind deflector on some 2005 and early 2006 Scion tC sport coupes. The original glass wind deflector, which tilts upwards into the airstream when the moonroof is open, can be damaged by impact from road debris at highway speeds. In some cases, the deflector can shatter and pieces can fall into the passenger compartment. Only three such cases have been reported to the NHTSA.Affected vehicle owners will be notified of the voluntary, no charge service upgrade to the deflector beginning in late October.Heh, I guess the same designer who came up with our fog lights worked on the moonroof. "I say we use glass HERE!"

They are too good to use that 'R' word, that word is only applicable on the "lesser" makes. Same goes for Honda.

Sounds like something rare, something big enough to do that would have to be kicked up by a semi or other large truck. In any case it would be VERY rare to hit something that small with road debrit.

That's an interesting one... They're mighty hush hush about that recall. I found it elsewhere where I didn't have to have a login: http://www.indystar.com/apps/p.../1003Quote »Toyota's recall covers 17 car models, including its popular Corolla sedans and Vitz compact models, because of a defective headlight switch caused by a design problem, Toyota said on its Web site. All vehicles involved were produced between May 2000 and September 2002, the company said.Wow, they described the details of said "recall" well. It should be of historical significance, being the largest recall in Japan's history, so in theory one would expect more details. At least any time GM/Ford/Chrysler have to recall something over here, it becomes well known pretty darn quick. Within minutes, the entire country is talking about the latest chapter in the Ford spontaneous combustion saga, etc...

The company says the engines can stall, due to an electricalproblem. The dashboard warning light may come on and the gasoline engine shuts down, but the car's electric engine will continue to operate so drivers can pull to the side of the road. In some cases, motorists have been able to restart the gasoline engine.

No, actually a SSC is 100% voluntary, whereas a Recall has the weight of the government behind it. The automaker has the burden of proof to fix at least 85~90% of the affected vehicles. Toyota has been very successful in implementing SSC's and getting the vehicles fixed without government involvement in the past.
