improving the wired fm modulator

Post by tentdirt »

i've had my scosche FM-MOD01 FM modulator for a few months now and was thrilled with it's easy install. it's been the perfect option for listening to my ipod in my '05. my setup is getting power from the back of the cig lighter and is grounded under a screw that's involved in the radio mount.i'm wanting to improve the quality of the sound it's producing. i recently bought the monster rca to mini cord-- which not only helped the quality out, it also stopped that annoying pause-if-the-ipod-thinks-the-headphones-are -being-unplugged. i'd like to hear less of the light hiss and static (i understand that none isn't possible-- i'd just like to find that setup that produces the least.) I'm also, occasionally getting a constant high end which can sometimes be resolved by a random unpluging and replugging of ipod and modulator connections and turing off and on the modulator. i've also noticed some interference in the signal when i plug my ipod car charger into the ipod.any thoughts on improved performance... would things get better with a more expensive modulator..different ground...etc.thanksbrooke

AUX2CAR adapter. Skip the FM modulation - it's quality will only ever be as good as the FM tuner it's attached to. Mediocre at best. You loose a huge range of sound quality - highs and lows when you modulate to an FM signal.Search the forums for "Ipod adapter" it's a popular discussion. I skipped using an FM Mod and went right to a direct RCA input with the Aux2Car for my iPod and XM Roady2 - couldn't be happier! Think of the difference between FM and CD... yeah, it's that good.

I have recently been looking at options to have a generic audio aux to connect ot the stock Headunit. One option is a wired FM modulator available at bestbuy for about $43.Binary,how much is the aux2car adapter you speak of?basically i just want a set of RCA's I can plug my audio source into and go.

Quote, originally posted by zionzr2 »how much is the aux2car adapter you speak of?according to GMJAP's postings, the aux2car will work in a 2004 if your headunit has a "BAND" button, but will not work if your headunit has a 'AM/FM" button

I got the iPod2car by Peripheral and I'm VERY happy with it. Granted, I don't want to get all "techie"--I just want to be able to plug my iPod in and listen to it through my car speakers, and that's what I can do. They wired it so the cable pops out through the little cubby in the shifter, and it works swell. I can switch tracks through my iPod or through the car stereo. The unit itself was close to $200, which isn't cheap, but it's installed in the back of the head unit, so the only thing you see is the white cable. And that's only because my stupid door won't close in my cubby. If I could get THAT thing to close you'd never know the cable was in there. The sound is good, and there's NO hissing since it's not through an FM station. I'm happy with mine!!

I'm using a Peripheral adapter that's not the Aux2Car- it's specific to the headunit. I think it was around $60, which (IIRC) is much cheaper than the Aux2Car...Let me know and I'll track down the model number- I got it from Cruchfield, too, so you could probably find it for cheaper if you look.I also went the extra mile and got a Harmon-Kardon Drive+Play so that I wouldn't have to mess with the iPod itself when driving- I ran the cables to the console and put in a belt clip mount in the bin so the iPod just goes in the bin on the mount- out of sight, out of mind, and it's not visible if I leave it in the car overnight.

I do indeed have the "Band" button.but I may get the Wired FM Modulator from BB.If I dont like it I'll give it to my wifes car.I'll need to do this before to long, going on a solo trip to help my brother move. Need plenty of tunes and gps laptop is ready to go...from looking at the pics of the instal, it dosent look like its that hard to get to the headunit unit.
