screws for the rear plate ?

Post by djpositivek »

Got my plate in the mail and I bought a smoke license plate cover and some stainless screws but the screws are too big. Anybody know what size I need ? Not sure what size these are, I just got a package at Canadian Tire that are made for most license plates. They just say "stainless steel fasteners". Thanks in advance.

They're 10 mm, but I have yet to find any that will fit at any auto parts store. The thread is pretty fine, whereas that's not the case with just about every license plate bolt/screw/whatever I've found thus far at an auto parts store. So even when I found bolts with the proper diameter, the stupid things wouldn't screw in there anyway. In short, I ended up having to go to a dealer because I couldn't find replacement bolts for mine.

I think they are 10mm with an 8.8 twist thread. I have not been able to find any in stainless steel anywhere either. None at Home Depot, none at Aubachon. Still looking.

Hmmm... didn't think it would be that difficult to find screws ! maybe I'll get a couple of each 10mm and M6 x 1.0 ? and try them. Canadian Tire usually has a bunch of bins with different size screws. Thanks for the replies. Anyone else ?

M6 is the metric pitch of the bolt threads and 1.0 is the threaded length of the bolt. 10MM is the just the size of the bolt head, ie., 10MM wrench or socket and has nothing to do with the hole the bolt will fit. If the bolt is not a M6 thread, it will not screw into the license plate bolt hole.

Thanks. one more question... I found some of these but I don't think they were stainless. The stainless ones that I found were numbered. #8, #10, #12 etc... What the heck does that translate to ?Also I'm assuming these stay in there (self tapping ?) because you can't get back there easily to put a washer/bolt.

hmmmm... This gets more interesting. I e-mailed the saleman and he said to call parts counter. Called parts counter and they put me through to salesman. He said they should have been in the glove box. I said I don't think they were but I'll check again. They are not there. Figured I should check all the storage compartments in the cargo area too. I lifted the big centre piece where the jack and stuff are stored and what do I find but a plastic bag with what appears to be some type of license plate holder and a bag with 2 black screws.I'm wondering if this meant for the front (in provinces/states that require a front plate) ? I don't need a front one so I can use those screws in the back I guess. They seemed kind of snug when I tried to hand thread them but I may need to WD-40 the little holes and use a screwdriver or drill to get them in there. Not sure what these screws are made of but as long as they don't rust up and make my plate look ugly I don't really care. I'll try these out soon and let you guys know. Thanks to everyone who replied.

Possibly... my fount mount is screwed into the bumper with some wickedly HUGE self tapping screws. I'd say they augered out 1/16" hole. Also they didn't use a Pontiac mount - so the screws didn't go into the dents formed into the bumper... grrr.

I'll have to scope those out. Thanks for the info there... I need to replace mine before winter and put another heavy coat of paint down through the bolt holes, as I've had some rusting back there, time to check up on it again.

Thanks for the advice guys. The ones with the front holder were too big. Bought some M6 x 1.0 and they fit perfectly. Don't think they're stainless so I'll keep looking for some and keep an eye on these ones. They should be good for awhile. Once again, you guys helped out where the Pontiac dealership couldn't.

I used some slick looking black button-head allen screws when I installed my plates. I figure it makes it harder for someone to steal my plates and they look good too.
