Here's a manufacturer of intakes and oiled gauze filters that clearly states of the new design "This improved efficiency translates into longer engine life". The filter efficiency is comparable paper drop-ins where oiled gauze like K&N if clearly poorer. These are currently for truck installation but expect to see them for car use soon. There is currently a 5" long filter that could be adapted to car intakes.
