Moonroof Sunroof stuck open in vent position

Post by whitfiel »

Today the moonroof (sunroof) on my 03 Vibe stuck open in the vent position. Vent position is when the back is tilted up. I opened the vent last night in my garage, kept it open all day today in a sunny parking lot (no trees within 1/4 mile), drove for 25 miles on highway, then could not close it. I can hear the relay in the ceiling switch module clicking, and a faint whine sound coming from the motor when I press the down button (relay click only when I press the up button). The service manual has lots on electrical checking, but with the motor whine, I'm inclined to think it's mechanical. The mechanical section of the service manual doesn't get into failure analysis, instead going through removal/installation which is significant work. Being an 03, it should be covered by warranty. But I always perfer to do work myself when possible, or at the very least know what the service tech will be doing to my car.Yes, I searched GenVibe for similar - all I found was the sun shade catching on the moonroof when it's sliding back. This doesn't appear to apply to my situation. Thanks in advance for any help.

Quote, originally posted by whitfiel » Being an 03, it should be covered by warranty. You might want to check on that - 03s came out in 02. So my 03 is no longer covered under warranty because I've had it for over 3 years (I got it new in 02).

I think the motor drives the glass by pulling on a plastic chain. Maybe your chain broke. I understand the desire to do the work yourself, but I think for this one, if under warranty, you might be better off letting the dealer fix it. If you do take it in, check the headliner before and after, some members have gotten the extra benefit of greasy fingerprints on the headliner after dealer service. but it has been a while since you first posted about the problem. Any updates?

Here's an update: The day following my post, I checked my service manuals - the failure chart only addressed electrical issues. I was confident the motor was getting power as I could hear the relay clicking in, and could hear a faint whine noise as if the windings of the motor were indeed getting power. I did pull down the switch assembly and verified some voltages on the connectors, but without removing the headliner, I didn't get to see the motor shaft nor it's drive belt/etc.Further reading the service manual in the mechanism section showed that the entire headliner needed to be removed, and that wasn't a simple job. All of a sudden a warranty claim was looking better. Yes, you are absolutely right that greasy fingerprints are a possibility - and it's stuff like that that always makes me spend a reasonable amount of time with the car and svc manual before actually taking it in. So, I resolved to take it in the next morning.Just before backing out of my garage the next morning, I took my fist and thumped up on the window pretty hard. Then I tried the switch and it closed. I then cycled it 30 times or so and haven't had it get stuck since. My guess is it just got stuck mechanically. So now I'm wondering if/when it will happen again. I never wanted a moonroof anyway - it just came with the nice stereo. But geeze, should I keep trying it to get it to fail again, or just live with it closed (or maybe only sliding horizintally - the failure was the tip up vent)????Postscript: In my pretty extensive reading here on the GenVibe forum, I discovered I have the "clicking window" problem with my drivers side window. I think it's a double problem, the clicking of the door open limit strap, as well as probably a loose mechanism. So back to the same quandry as I noted above - do I take it in under warranty and risk some hack not properly fixing it, or do I fix this myself but not be able to get the improved door open limit strap? I was inside my Toyota Corolla doors several time in the 10yrs I had my two 1992 Corollas, and these doors look similar. I welcome any thoughts on the window click problem. I need to get this fixed before the window breaks as some have reported.

if tnpartsguy is right in http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=18049 and the parts really are $75 each, then I say get it fixed under warranty, get them all fixed before the warranty runs out.

I forgot about how expensive the door checks were. doh. Yep, I'll take it in and let the dealer shop do it. Thanks for reminding me of that thread (there are 2-3 threads on window clicks - another one discussed door checks too, as well as loose mechanisms.)Has anyone found a complete listing of all Vibe TSBs? I've read a few postings on other threads with partial TSB listings, but no reference to a "mother lode" of them all. Thanks again!
