Totaled Car

Does anyone have any experiece as to what to expect if your car is totaled? My brother was in an accident and it will cost almost $14k to fix the car. Since it's a year old Saturn SC2 I'm sure they won't spend the money. We are just waiting on the insurance company of the kid that caused the accident to respond. Any suggestions or comments?
