knock when driving for 5 seconds

Post by northvibe »

Ok well the title sucked but here is what happens, I think it only happens when the engine is cold but. I will start the car, unlock the parking brake, shift into reverse to back out of my spot then shift into drive then after 2-3 seconds my car makes a knock while im going like 5mph or so. Then the sound is gone, i dont remember hearing it while i drive at all but i do play music... anyone know what it could be? ill be bringing it to get looked at for that and a pinhole inthe cv boot on the passenger side, but i want to have a idea before i bring it in, incase the mechanics are gonna pull the i found nothing/ its suppose to do that

Uh oh... I don't call my car "Sir Knocksalot" for no reason. Mine too began to tick just a weeeee bit when cold, then it went downhill from there. The tick turned into an all-out knock after some time. Granted, none of this took place until >30K mi. When it's cold out, it knocks so severely I'd swear that one day something's gonna fly through the block/oil pan/whatever else. Summer, it depends - it can just tick a little at idle and ever so slightly, or it can also decide the knock wants to be more pronounced. It used to go away after the engine warmed up, but not anymore. There is always some sort of tick/knock/other abnormal noise present at all times. You can always tell it when accelerating. The dealer didn't do squat about it, other than telling me the noise is coming from the valve train. No fix for it. Odd, since I've yet to hear another Vibe w/ the base engine to sound as bad as mine. So, I feel for you if it turns in to the mess I've had to deal with. But maybe it won't - let's hope it doesn't last beyond 5 seconds.

Seriously CP... you need to just set your dealer on fire and be done with it. On topic though - this little 4cyl is loud when ideling... Lots of valve ticks and such. I guess I'm not used to it compared to the muffled purr of the V-6 I used to have. This would explain the delux hood insulation I guess...

It isn't just a 4 vs. a 6.I've never met a GM 4 cylinder nearly as loud as this Toyota engine is.

ok this is a abnormal knock. it never happened when i first had the car or test drove them. (removed) if its likc CP...i swear..its the last GM i buy... hahah god i hate cars sometimes. I hope the dealership up here is good. i hope i dont put 8k miles on it before winter, then maybe i can get it to knock more. My dad's friend had a new chevy truck when going up north the engine started to knock and he brough it to the nearest dealer and they said its not worth fixing drive it till it blows and get a new engine....so he did, under warranty of course.

hmm well it didnt do it this morning, im hoping is some ball joint or something with the suspension as duluth is POT HOLE HEAVEN and likes to break suspension. but it happened to me in the cities. Could this be from the parking break not releasing properly? On my sable one of the calipers wasnt releasing the pads far enough so it would make a noise but not a knock.....

do you mean a 'knock' sound or do you mean your engine 'knocking'?if it's a 'knock' sound which appears to be coming from under the car (wheel wells?) then it's similar to a problem i had. But mine would make that sound the first time i applied the brakes while going forward AFTER a brake application while going backwards.Based on what you're saying, you're backing out of the driveway, applying brakes. Then start moving forward and you hear a 'knock' sound. Are you applying brakes during this time at all?Either way, I brought it to the attention of my dealer and they said they had to change the caliper pins as the caliper was shifting (?!?!). Once they did that, the 'knock' has stopped, but they did a good job putting a warp in my rotor! That's another story....

HUh.. ok yea that sounds sorta like it. WHEN i hear it lol, this is how it went. I parke my car forward into a parkign spot, put in park, apply the parkign brake then shut off the car. When i come out again i start the car, release the parking brake then shift to reverse, back out of the spot, stop then shift to drive. I let go of the brake and slowly move forward and would hear it go knock/clunk sorta like a ball joint that was really loud (metal klunk sorta sound, man describing sounds is hard) I should have a friend stand by my car next time i do this to see where its from. but thats how it goes, i do have to use the brakes a ton in duluth because of all the hills so maybe it is the caliper. got my fingers crossed

could be the same problem. mine wouldn't make that sound until i applied the brakes the first time (i'm assuming the caliper touched the rotor which then caused it to shift).Maybe your's occurs just from the bit of friction the pads have on the rotor without being applied?
