Pontiac GTO question

Post by Stang2Vibe »

My dad had a 1970 GTO convertible with the Hurst 4-speed that I remember very well from when I was quite young. For years I had wondered what the name GTO stood for. Now that the GTO is coming back for 2004 (although I think that the new rendition is a disgrace to the car's name and reputation), I have finally found out what the GTO stands for. Just wondering if anyone else knew too, perhaps some from the musclecar era would recall the answer easily.

Gran Turisimo Omelegato (sp). DOn't ask me what it means - I think a Ferrari had a similar name.

i means GTO Gran Turismo Omologato it was origionally put on the road by ferrari in 1958 and was THE premier road car. then pontiac released the GTO, a modified tempest, in 1964 into full production. DeLorean and GM got in some hot water over it because in Italy GTO was supposed to be limited production and high performance. In America the 'goat' was actually considered the first muscle car, being large displacement engine in a small body car.yogi

GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato.Gran Turismo basically means Grand Touring (as in racing).Omologato means that it's legal for racing because it is "homologated". Basically it means that enough copies were built to be sold to the public to make it legal and and not a special built race car.Ferrari used the name first and Pontiac just copied it.
