Quote »Men: Standing Under 'No Standing' Sign Cost Us $50POSTED: 8:21 am EDT July 20, 2005UPDATED: 12:19 pm EDT July 20, 2005NEW YORK -- New York has apparently begun ticketing people walking on the sidewalk. Two men who stopped to talk on a west side Manhattan sidewalk said they were ticketed for standing under a "No Stopping or Standing" sign. The sign is at a gate in Hudson River Park that appears to warn people from parking cars there. But 25-year-old Jason Eng said he and a friend were given a $50 ticket by a parks officer Sunday night for talking on the sidewalk.Eng said the ticket is ridiculous.Eng said he and a friend, 27-year-old Dennis Spafford, had just left a gay pride party aboard the Queen of Hearts riverboat and were walking home.Eng said a park police officer in a car pulled alongside to ask what they were doing. He said they said "nothing" and kept walking. The parks officer yelled at them to stop and after checking their identification he gave them $50 tickets "for failure to comply with signs."Parks Department spokesman Warner Johnston said the "No Stopping or Standing" sign is aimed at loiterers. Johnston also said the two men were sitting on the on the ground when they were stopped by the police. Both men deny they were sitting down.Source:
