Im pretty much a newb when i comes to car customization, Im still learning engine's basically, but I want to know this; Im also a low level computer geek and I wanted to know if anybody has installed a PC in there Vibe yet. Here what I want to do....LCD (large as possible, an indash flip out screen would be cool)PC (No more than a P4 1.6ghz 512mb ddr 40gb Hdd Geforce 3 or better)DVD-R (Of coure to watch and steal movies from friends, screw these overpaid schizophrenic's they call actors I have low specs on the PC because Im afraid of power consumption and heat. Albiet PC's dont really consume that much power, save for video cards nowadays, heat would destroy it pretty quick. My Vibe is, of course, black on black and it pretty much sits in the sun all day while Im at work. It gets insanely hot in that car. I need to get some tents and one of the windshield covers. I just thinking at work today it would be cool if I could load all my mp3's, games, movies and the such. Let me know if yall know sumtin aboot dees.[end crunkness]
It can be done, and has been done. I'm also thinking about doing this but won't have the money for it for a long time.Jahntassa switched his nav out. http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id ... mp3car.com will be your best friend for the project. There is a really clean matrix install in the forums. From what I've seen 7" is about as big as in-dash as you can get to fit, without heavy customization. I'm not sure about how big a popout screen will fit.
HAS been done. HaHA!Alright..if you go my route, I have a 7" Widescreen in my dash in place of the radio. No flipout. Cost me $200 on ebay, though you can get better screens.Flipout monitors will cost you somewhere around $300-$500, but, they can be worthwhile. Do NOT get a composite input monitor. They suck. End of story. Touchscreen is your preference, but I also highly reccomend it.You might not even need to go that fast with the processor, but it depends on what you want it to do. A lot of people will go with the EPIA Mini-ITX boards, but they don't get very fast. As many people will say, don't just get a PC in a case and strap it down in the back.Heat you probably shouldn't have to worry about. But it depends on what kind of enclosure and where you put it. My system is under the passenger seat and doesn't seem to have many heat issues (yet).Other stuff you can do:NavigationMoviesWeb accessPretty much anything you want!It depends on how much you're willing to spend, though. Also, if you want to replace the radio altogether, or get a new radio and have it work with the CarPC. I personally have my CarPC going to an Alpine EQ, then to my amps for audio. No radio whatsoever.IM Me if you need specific info!
