What are your thoughts on the new GTO?

Post by tangerine »

After lookingat cars online all day I'v narrowed my search's to a dodge charger SRT8, a Chrystler Crossfire SRT6, or a Pontiac GTO. The new GTO is at the top of my list, I like the style and power, as well as the new charger. The crossfire is last on my list, its nicely built and I'v been looking for a convertable but $53,000 makes ya say whoa. anyhew, I'v read discussions on the charger but haven't heard much on the new GTO...anyone out there care to give their imput?

I'd like the GTO or the SRT8 Charger, but my vibe gets about double the mpg of either of those two, so I don't look at them seriously. there was a genviber who went by the name disneydj, he sold his Vibe and bought a GTO. you might find him over at http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/ and ask for a comparison of the Vibe and the GTO (apples and oranges, I know)

The GTO is an awesome car for the money. If they were sold in Canada, I would definitely consider getting one.

I'm glad you gave me that link after seeing what can be done to these things I'm sold. I have to wait 10 days before i can file an accident report which is dumb but once i get the ball rolling on my insurance I think I'm gonna buy a black GTO with the lava red leather seats and guages.

You can get an 04 cheap because they have a 5.7 liter engine and everyone wants the 05 that has a 6 liter.Plus the 05 has some exterior parts that look a lot better.Gm sent my dealership new hoods, spoilers and grill inserts to make them look like 2005's in an effort to get them to sell.1 sold and the other was dealer traded.SORRY!!! excuse me....5.7 liter....you have no idea how many numbers run through my head...my mistake

I love the GTO, since they put the new model out I have been fascinated with them. People say they look to plain, but I just think that ads to the bad (removed) look.

I think so too! I'm not the type that enjoys the "big ol' macho roast the tires off that back of that sucker" variety of cars, but damn the new GTO is great. I could care less about the performance, I just love the way they look... And adding the fact that they'll move quite nicely into the mix, damn...Not sure why the hell they aren't selling! Considering the sticker price of a Vibe can get to the $26-$27K range if one tries hard enough, another $7K MSRP for the GTO is a steal. It's a shload of car and performance for that kind of cash! But since nobody is interested in 'em, that means good things for those who do want one, I bet there are some tremendous deals to be had .

The 2004 had a 350HP 5.7 liter engine. The 2005 has the 400HP 6.0 liter engine, hood scoop, and dual exhaust exiting at each side. My brother is leasing one at $130 month, no money down (there was a great deal in December.) The car is great. However, you will not get the gas mileage of the Vibe, and it requires premium.

I love my GTO. It's a really nice car, inside and out. Fit & finish on the interior is just amazing. Plenty of power. There's a huge aftermarket for GTO's also. When my father-in-law drove the Charger R/T Hemi he said there was no way to disable the traction control like there is in the GTO (button right next to the shifter). Not that I would ever turn it off to engage in any hooliganism Probably not a deal-breaker but just so you know.Quote, originally posted by joatmon »I'd like the GTO or the SRT8 Charger, but my vibe gets about double the mpg of either of those two, so I don't look at them seriously. My GTO gets 19-20mpg and I apply a healthy dose of GO pedal a couple times a day. There's an average MPG readout in the Driver Info Center in the dash and I reset it every fillup. Mileage can vary of course, but this is what I experience on a consistent basis. You can also make it show realtime MPG readings which change constantly. Driving a constant 65mph showed 27mpg. 35mph equaled about 18mpg. I once set it on realtime and floored it going down an onramp. The realtime reading showed 0.7mpg (removed)!

the chargers are also manual only. they have an auto-stick thing but that just isnt the same. why not build a manual transmission? plus i dont know that i really trust the variable displacement thing

i think the gto suffered from teh intro and hasnt recovered.they brought it out in winter, and dealers (here at least) wanted 10k over. its a great car, but its not a great $45k car. turned a lot of people off and before ya know it... they bought something else. like me. once i made the decision not to go with it, its not like 6 months later when they took the overcharge of it i was gonna magically change my mind.i love the 05, especially with the sport appearance package.they need to add one more package that gives you dimming mirrors and fold down seats and make it a car that is truly world class.just my opinion. i thought for sure i would own one. they announced the car on my birthday.i wanted blue with the blue sueded interior.i have no doubt that the people who are getting them for steals now are extremely happy and are going to have a field day with the corvette mods that will apply.

Combine that with the somewhat bland/tame styling, and it came across to me as a great drivetrain in search of a better looking car. It's not that I think it's bad looking at all...I like the clean lines, and I'd hate to think about what Pontiac would have done with it 10 years ago (cladding, wings, etc), but it's one of the few cars on the market that comes across to me as having a lot of potential but just missing something in the styling department.I thought I read somewhere that in the federalization process the gas tank was moved from its original location (down low in the rear of the car) because of rear-impact explosion/fire concerns. I'm pretty sure it sits vertically behind the rear seats. That kills the idea of a folding rear seat, and makes the trunk smaller than it could be.
