I just got this interesting link that Illinois will begin deploying "Speed Camera Vans" on the highways and was wondering if anyone knows what these look like? When I googled them I got a bunch of links for european ones but nothing really stateside. I'm not a huge speeder but at the same time if you don't go at least a little fast in by Chicago you're goin to get run over.http://www.dot.state.il.us/press/r033005.html
The question isn't 'What are we going to do?' The question is 'What aren't we going to do?'
Scottsdale and Mesa have been using the "picture vans" as I call them for quite a long time. They are usually white with a blue stripe with various law enforcement lettering. They blend in pretty well within the side of the road, and are easily missed. Sometimes Mesa picture vans will post a sign (also easily missed ) warning drivers of "photo radar enforcement ahead." Knock-on-wood I've never had my picture taken, but as I see them all the time, I pretty much know most of the areas where they park. There was a big stink here a while back about picture vans on the freeway in Scottsdale. That particular stretch of highway is known for H-I-G-H speeds and little police presence. Last I heard, they were still going to be placed to see if they are effective or not, as well as an increase in DPS patrols.

I laugh when I see people stomp on their brakes when they notice the vans (I can usually spot them early enough to coast down to the speed limit) My wife drives that stretch of the 101 they want to put cameras on. I think the last time they cracked down on speeders there, the fastest was going like 115+ I think. The vans in Mesa are pretty easy to spot (White Chevy AstroVan with the blue stripe on the sides) Not sure if they're watching people going in each direction, or just one-way.

Although I don't know for sure, I think the vans only check for speeders on the side of the road they are parked on. I agree that it's funny to see people slam on their brakes when they spot the van. When I see one, I push in the clutch and cruise on by.Nice to see another GenVibe member in Mesa. WOO-HOO!!!
