Since this was a replacement for a stolen car, I didn't have the luxury of ordering a security system. As you can guess I want one now and am not fond of the idea of taking it to some "alarm place".Has anyone done it themselves? I'm very handy, but I don't have any idea what is involved nor where to buy a good quality RELIABLE alarm that will work off my exisiting power remote.Thanks,Scott
To make your alarm work of your existing remote, you should have got the factory alarm.Some alarms will unlock doors too but you will lose your hatchback opener for sure.I wish I had got the factory alarm now. I would want one with a starter disable if I was buying one. Simple ones are not too involved, 2 wires >1 hour to install. More connections = more time. You might want to ask your dealer if it is too late to get the factory alarm installed.

I got an aftermakket alram system with remote starter from Power start. This is a 2 way system, which it mean the remote talk with the alamr mudule and vice-versa. If the alarm starts on the car, the remote starts shaking (like a pager).It cost about $500 installed (manual transmission).The remote control is programmed to lock/unlock doors and hatch.
Sorry, I was wrong. In the manual, it sais 2500 feet, and the person with who I installed it (it is his work to install alarm system and remote starter) told me 2500 feet is may be a little optimistic but 2000 or at worst 1500 is more realistic.I made some test and it works very well at 2000 feet.Also, if you want to spend a little bit more money, you can buy the other version of this alarm system (about $200 more then the model I have) who works at 25 000 feet (5 km). This sytem use regular FM modulation.

Power Start is the manufacturer. In fact, this is not written power start on it. It is a Data Start. The name is not the same but the module and all component are the same. It is just because where I bough it, they order tehm directly from Power Start with their own standard and spec. I got the Data-Stard installtion manuel with the Power-link owner manual. The Power Start model number is PL-7100-TWM.A two way remote engine starter and alarm with LCD display.On the LCD remote control, you can see your car and in what state it is. You can see if a door, the trunk or the hood is open. When you use the remoter starter, you can see smoked at the back of the car on the remote. Also, you can se up thre remote to start your car at a specific time of the day. When the alarm system detect an abnormal condition, (impact sensor, door open without the remote, etc) the remote starts shaking or buzzing.
you can make a kill switch with a simple toggle switch and connect it to the wires that run to the clutch pedal switch and this will disable the car

The Power Start system has a very good feature for safety. Usualy, on an aftermarker remote system, you have to press once any button to lock/unlock the doors or hatch. On mine, if you unlock the doors by mistake, the doors will luck automaticly after 30 secs. For the hatch, which you can lock without open it and close it maunally, you have to press the unlock button on the remote for 2 secs.
