CP's climate control knob "mod"

Post by ColonelPanic »

Heh, I defaced my climate control knobs... Er, "detriangled" I guess you could say. I noticed the temp knob was looking funny when the lights were on, it had this transparent look to it. Switched off the lights and saw the white paint or whatever was coming off, to reveal the clear red plastic underneath. Guess it didn't like armor all. So, i took some alcohol swabs and got what little paint there was left off of there. Did the same for the other three knobs to make it all consistent. lol It kinda screwed up the plastic on the knobs a bit (looks dull in spots) but that's ok with me. lol There is still a bit of white left on a couple knobs, but I'm going to fix that eventually. The effect is pretty interesting - especially during the day when you see the triangles glowing if you have the lights on. lol!

Pretty cool. I like how the triangles are brighter than the other lighted parts.Makes me wonder if it'd be possible to put a different color paint over it...

If you find a light enough paint, you probably could. You can pull the center knob straight back to remove it and see the color of the plastic from behind, so you can see the color without taking any of the white off, if that would help you pick a color for it.

I remember seeing those mods, quite interesting. Too bad we don't have the perfectly clear knobs, all we get that's transparent is the little triangle. That sure would look interesting.

I lucked out... The warranty says that the triangles are covered for defects in material or workmanship for the first 12 months/12,000 miles, so the warranty was up on them anyway.

CP- knowing what you know about these types of modes... can it be done with the side buttons that say AUTO for the windows and the door lock switch, etc?

It's probably just white writing on the black plastic and wouldn't have a need for the red. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure I'd want to be the one to experiment and try it out.

I thought the one switch that says auto actually lights up.you could always wire in some LED's under the switch plate for some back lighting???
