Stock sub in 2005 vibe possible sound fix.

Post by rlfreese »

OK. Most automakers that have stock subs, ie hyundai tiburon have hooked the sub up out of sequece (backwards) so It will push inside the box and not outside like a normal sub, this keeps the sound and bass at a low level and keeps your speaker from blowing if the radio is tuned too high for the speaker to handel. My buddy has a tiburon and has reversed the wires and it hits hell of alot louder now. Is this a problem with the 05 vibe or not. There are a few other cars wit the same thing just a thought.

You can give it a try if you have one, but it could void whatever warranty there is on the stereo. Don't know if it would help in the Vibe.

It always "pushes" in both directions. The "out of sequence" wiring you refer to is simply reversing polarity so that a positive wave front moves toward the trough of the wave and not toward the peak. in the first part of the cycle. What you are hearing in the Tiburon is a phase cancellation at the blend frequencies where the sub is playing the same notes as the mid-range/midbass drivers. If it plays louder with the subwoofer wired out of phase or "reversed" then you have discovered an inherent flaw. Most people wire everything in phase or with the positive going to the positive terminal and the negative going to the negative terminal on all speakers. In every environment the phase cancellations are different as they are with crossover geometry and driver compliment, so sometimes to more accurately reproduce the full sound spectrum in any given environment you must determine whether or not phase is a factor...in the case of the Tiburon, it must be, in the case of the Vibe I have no data to support a 180 degree shift of polarity, but it could be worth a try.

...that's something close to what I might've said, had I been fully awake. That was a great explanation "idontknowwhatimdoing"!

Thanks for the kudos...I was just re-reading my post and it seemed a little confrontational...but I hope that is not perceived the case...FYI........I am an 18 year veteran in the audio industry so I can usually answer most audio related questions with some authority. My primary focus these past 18 years has been the loudspeaker and in particular the subwoofer so I am pretty certain I can answer these types of questions.

OK, I don't want to hijack here, but I have a question. I have a bandpass box with 2 kicker comp 10"s. I would like to get a better range out of the bass. I have this box running off of a 2 channel Rockford Phosgate Punch 300 Amp. How should I set the amp to provide the best output for these speakers. My HU allows me to configure the amp for high, mid, low and also to adjust the amp level from 0 (normal with no boost) to 12 (max boost) this level is independent of the door speakers.
