My 2005 Vibe Came With Only Half Of A Roof Rack???

Post by stevo2000 »

and the rest of the Roof Rack isn't offered as an add-on or accessory.Does anyone have part numbers for the Standard Cross-Bars, in Platinum/Silver if color-coded?Why would anyone in their right mind put only half of a roof rack on a vehcile?

The crossbars are all black, as far as I know, and I think they are offered as an option on the '05. They were standard in '03 and '04.Selling the car without the crossbars doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either, but I guess it's a way of cutting corners and saving money. Many others prefer the non-crossbar look, though, and have actually chosen to take theirs off.You may be able to buy some from a member who removed theirs and doesn't want them, or else check with your dealer, they should be able to help you get them. I'm sure someone else on here has the part number as well.

They're available as an add-on accessory through your dealer. The online accessories catalog doesn't show them. The part number is 12498684 I believe, and they retail for around $130.They are not color coded.

My opinion of why crossbars were removed in 05 is due to their functionality. They were the curved or bowed style, which is common with most vehicles. They also had a load rating of under 100 lbs. These are good for carrying a light load of lumber or a small matress. When I was last at the stealership, I mean dealership, when I bought my Vibe there was an 06 model that had what looked like Thule crossbars and feet with GM plastered all over the feet. They were similar to Thule's "450 Crossroad" system but had locks on the ends of the bars, not on the feet...kind of interesting. I have the "450 Crossroads" and use them on my girlfriend's Mazda Tribute and on my Jeep Wrangler's roll cage. They are very versatile. However the strap that wraps around any vehicle's factory roof rack side rails are 2 inches max wide so under a somewhat heavy load coupled with wind resistance, like that created by my sea kayaks doing 75 MPH, the crossbar system tends to rtotate a few degrees towards the back of the vehicle. This can scratch the boats and lead to fatigue of the feet's straps. The rack I saw on the 06 Vibe was more stout, the feet were wider adn the feet straps were wider providing a larger bite, more surface area, on the factory side rails so less of a torsional load would be applied.
