Installed: auto dimming mirror in '05 non-M&T FWD

Post by jeffgtx »

Installed a dimming mirror from a 97-03 Pontiac grand prix into my 2005 base vibe today. If you read my other post, i was having problems. but i confirmed the mirror worked in the lab today and got some measurement to pass along.apparently, i had it wired backwards yesterday when trying the first time. doh.The mirror operates off 12Vwhen off, it draws 9mAwhen turned on, it peaks at 190mA and settles to about 90mA after it is done dimming.Connected it to the existing vibe hookup. the third wire it has is for reverse signal (so it goes out of dim mode when going backwards) is not connected.as you know, the non M&T is not switched power up there (for the reading lamps) so yes, teh lamp is dimming after the car is off. however, and apparently this is an '05 feature, the green LED indicating the lamp was dimming went off 20 minutes after i locked the car. the it turned back on after i opened my door to get in. so i am hoping power drain will not be an issue.you may be wondering why i used this mirror... cause it was $6.99 at the junkyard i will post if i have any drain problems or anything. Thanks everybody for the tidbits of knowledge along the way.Jeff

Good to hear the news! Great to hear the mirror can be added without any additional wiring! As long as your car remembers to turn everything off, you should be OK with the way it is wired up currently. Do keep us posted and let us know how it works.

The only thing I would wonder about is any potential adverse effects from tripping the rundown protection every single time you turn the car off... I guess there shouldn't be any, but with something that isn't really intended to get that much regular use, you never know.Nice to know someone's rundown protection works though...LOL. I miss my automatic 20-minute radio timer when sitting waiting on people with the car parked.
