Black Roof rails ???

Post by Zig »

WE just got a new Black GT Vibe, and it has chrome metal roof rails. Somewhere I have seen pictures (GM Vibe page) of Vibe's with black luggage rails. We thought we ordered the body color match option. I guess my question is, how do you get BLACK roof rails?

Same way I plan to, take them off, and have them powder coated. I plan to get mine done in black chrome.

Powdercoating seems to be the way to go but you could possibly go to Auto-Zone, go to the vinyl decal section, get the 5" wide black vinyl windshield visor banner stuff and wrap the metal in vinyl. This is a simple, cheap effective way to get similar visual results. The black vinyl matches the plastic parts fairly well so it should look fine.Dave

I don't know how you get black ones other than like the other guys said, powder coat them. I would however like to Welcome you to Genvibe! I like seeing another Vibe owner from Indiana... Where abouts are you?

A friend used a new DupliColor metal spray-paint on some aluminum pieces under his hood. It's looks like it's anodozed red. I'm thinking of trying that stuff in a black for my rails. I will take them off once it warms up.

I used "anodizit" to paint my engine cover, and it peeled the next day...Not sure if it has issues with plastic, or if the paint itself sucks. I'd wait and give him a month to make sure the stuff is gonna hold up though..

I just installed my new/old powdercoated roof rails. I changed them to black. I think It looks better than the aluminum or blue they used to be.

I powder coated mine satin black for $30 for both. A local machine shop has a 7 step prep process and an automated conveyor line to spray and bake. Nonstandard colors are much more expensive because you have to buy a big bag of powder. You have to take off all the bottom molding. I broke all the clips, and had to buy new ones for $30 total. It definately improves the look.

I just dont know how hot that engine cover would get, that might be why the paint peeled off EDIT: ah after looking over duplicolors website their "Anodized" paint is called Metalcast, and it can be applied to non metals but needs a primer first. SUPER cool, custom projects here i come!

Pro-Strip charged me $50 to re-powdercoat my rails. beats the $100 for painting which I was quoted by a body shop.

I just primered it like 3 time... and coated it 3 times. But the stupid oil changing place chipped some paint off... so after i get the intake fixed and on ima re-paint mine!Good luck

You cant see it cuz of the lighitng... but its a CF strip... or black strip thats a part of the material used to go over the roof rack holes... i believe.
