Location of loud key buzzer

Post by LMK9232 »

Does anyone know the location of the loud, intermittent buzzer that sounds off when you leave your keys in the ignition? Some cars you need only pull the key half way out but on my Vibe the key must be removed completely for the noise to end. I don't want to remove the buzzer as I realize it is a safety feature but I 'd like to muzzle it down a bit with some duct tape or something. If I could only find it.

I think these cars only have one buzzer, and that it is on the circuit card on the back of the instrument cluster. It is used by the key reminder, the light reminder, the seat belt reminder, and the anything else reminder It is not that hard to remove the instrument cluster, i think there is a thread here somewhere about how to do it. Once you get it out, there's about ten phillips screws on the back to remove the rear cover, and in the middle of the circuit card under the rear cover is a small black cylinder maybe a half inch tall and 3/4 inch diameter(guessing at dimensions) with a hole in the center, that is the beeper.

It's actually pretty easy to just disable the KEY buzzer. You'll have to remove the lower cover on the steering column and unclip 1 plug below the key cylinder. I don't have a pic of it though...I have mine undone and it's nice to have the door open without that thing chirping. My headlight reminder buzzer luckily still sounds though.
