Automatic Transmission downshifting??

Hi all... new user/new buyer here.I just got my Vibe last night and noticed on the drive home that my automatic transmission seems to downshift like you would in a standard. Is this normal? Kinda freaked me out at the first red light, as I was almost stopped I saw the RPM gauge go up and heard the engine rev a litlle and I thought it was taking off on me!! Don't get me wrong, the downshifting was very smooth, just other automatics I've driven seem to go into pseudo neutral mode when braking and only shift again when you hit the gas. Just curious if this is normal... Thanks in advance!!!Pete

First of all welcome to a new Ottawa area resident. Yes the downshifting is normal, isn't it great. It saves on brakes, especially when slowing from highway speeds.
