Audio Upgrade Q's - Keep Factory H/U

Post by bh357 »

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my audio system. Currently, I have the 6 disk in-dash changer, with the standard 4 speakers. I would like to keep the factory changer. What kind of sound quality can I expect using the speaker level inputs on an amp, or using line-level converters?

They're going to be about the same, depending on the amp. Some amps have better hi-level stages, some don't. Line level converters and RCAs might give you better sound just because they have better noise cancelling properties.

Thanks Jahntassa. About how much distortion/loss of quality can I expect due to using high level inputs on the amp? Would I be able to expect a significant improvement in sound by going with an aftermarket h/u and using the low level connectors. I would like to use the factory changer if at all possible, if it won't cost me too much in sound quality. This is primarily to keep a stealth appearance, and also for the convienence of an in-dash changer.I will be installing Polk db6500s in all doors first, and running these off the factory radio to start. Eventually I do plan to add an amp.

The difference is generally very slight. My preference for RCAs over high-level runs is just noise buildup from the wire runs. If you get good quality RCAs, they reject any interference better.Aftermarket HUs will give you better sound quality. If you don't want to add an amp yet, the aftermarket internal amp is better than the factory, and if you want to add an amp later, you'll already have RCA pre-outs. But, you can still get quality sound off the factory. You can just get potentially more quality sound off aftermarket. If you go the line-level converter route, it just means it's easier to upgrade later if you so choose. Go ahead and do the speakers, that's a great first step, then you can do your amplifier. If you decide later you want to change the HU, it's a simple swap.Aftermarket HUs can give better sound if only because most of them have better sound processing, EQs, built in high-pass filters, etc. Those aren't neccesary for good sound, though.Be pretty confident that you can keep your factory head, and if something comes up later, it's an easy change.
