Automatic Tranny question

Post by Kingfisher »

When braking while driving down hills, the automatic transmission shifts into a lower gear (RPM's increase) and will not shift back up unless I slow down to about 20 mph. If I try to accelerate it remains in the lower gear. I don't recall this happening in my other vehicles or at least not as pronounced. I'm not well versed in the mechanics of vehicles so any thoughts would be appreciated. My warrenty expires in about 800 miles so I am getting a bit nervous!!! Thanks

This is normal. Mine does it too.The car automatically downshifts when braking (in some situations) to help aid the car in stopping. As you know, downshifting increases torque, and increased torque means the wheels don't turn as easily. Thus, downshifting slows the car down.
