Back in the summer, I got my windows tinted and needed a place for my glass-mount ham radio antenna. Since tint can have an adverse impact on these antennas (which kinda don't work so hot even on clear glass) I decided to cut a square hole in the tint and mounted that sucker to the right rear quarter window. Now, I'm thinking of taking it off, the mast has become pretty screwed up from hitting things, and it doesn't quite work as well as a good ol' mag mount would. Not like I ever use the thing, but anyway... But I'll have that big gaping hole in my pretty tint to contend with after the fact. So, what to do... I think I can tint that small window myself. I've got a nice heated garage down at the folks' house I can use, and have most stuff that I'd need down there already. Should I give it a try? Only a few problems with this route: A) I suck and I'm the one who will be doing it. lol! Actually, I don't think it will be too bad. I'll have plenty of film to keep trying if need be, the window won't use that much. B) I'm not sure I can obtain the same type of tint that the guy used on my car locally (Llumar something or other, 35%.) That seems to be good quality film, and if I'm going to yank off my antenna and get the window tinted again, that's what I would like to have back on it. But that's not stuff you can find at your average auto parts store. Any suggestions on where to find it?Or, just call up the guy who did my tint and give him a couple bucks to redo that window? I'm thinking that would probably be the best thing to do - he's darn good at this stuff and obviously has the film to match what was previously used. This way, it will probably cost quite a bit less, since I won't have to buy a whole friggin' roll of film. But I'm not sure if he does this stuff in the winter either, he works out of his garage... Tinting is just something he does on the side. I'll shoot him an e-mail to see what he says...Not sure which route I'll take... I'm glad I chose the location where I did (instead of mounting it to the back window like I had originally planned.) I figured the ol' antenna wouldn't stay on there for too long, so I didn't want to have too big of a mess to deal with. And when that's done, I'll slap a mag mount antenna on the roof. Didn't want to go that route earlier, but now that I've stuck a Sirius antenna up there, it's a done deal. lol!

I would probably just have the tint place do it. It will be a professional job so it will look right, you have the same kind of tint and it won't take him long to do it. I had to replace one of the side windows several months ago becasue I scratched it. I think it cost me $60 dollars to have it redone. That mini window shouldn't be more than $35 or $40.
I'd say let the pro do it. If he does it, and for some reason it doesn't hold up, (most) pros guarantee their work and will repair or replace the tint for free if something goes wrong...
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
Yeah, I cut the tint and scraped it all off. Don't believe I scratched the window. Hope not at least!I'll probably have the pro do it, he's got more of a clue than I. Or maybe leave the inside mount there and take the outside off, and leave it for a while. LOL!
