2003 1.8 standard model, 45K miles, this just suddenly appeared today, never had any problem starting. I finally tapped the side of th e starter and it engaged.......I'm an old man who worked on my old Mopars, does this starter have a separate bendix mounted? can that be replaced? Any and ALL related info would be much appreciated (especially since I have an ENVBY GREEN VIBE!) How about a quick reply to me at penick@nettally.com
I'll be happy to provide you with info from the service manual, but I'm not quite sure what to look for...Can you give me an idea of what you need? Schematics? Replacement?
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
Just out of warranty, and it sounds like the starter will not engage, the parts houses do not have this piece or even a starter. Anyone have a suggestion? penick@nettally.com
you could try to find one at a junkyard. Doesn't have to be from a just a Vibe, a Matrix starter would work, and probably one from a late model corolla, and who knows how many other toyota vehicles use the same starter. A toyota dealer could tell you about the interchangeability but you might need to tell them its for a Matrix, for just as some pontiac dealers don't know that the vibe and matrix are the same car under the skin, many toyota dealers don't know (or won't admit) it either.
I am very sure you have to replace the entire starter. Gone are the days of the separate replaceable selonoid... There is a relay, see below. However if you tapped the starter and it engaged, I suspect the starter not the relay. 1) Remove the instrument panel (IP) storage compartment. Refer to Storage Compartment Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console. 2) Remove the starter relay. Try another parts store, they are not a very rare type starter.
Just heard the contacts in these starters go bad over time and that may be my problem. ANyone else know about this contact issue? I plan to remove the starter and have the electronic shop look at it. The dealer I called didnt know anything about the starter, but I agree, the 1.8 must use the same one. Anyone purchased it yet? Cost? What year corolla do you think used this 1.8 motor.
WOW! Dealer wants $371.38 for a new starter. It appears that a 2002 Corolla should fit,Auto Zone had one for $188.00 ANy other suggestions? I was told it could be the contacts so I may remove the starter and have an electrtical shop look at that. please help!!!!!!penick@nettally.com
