Near death experience for me and the Vibe!

Post by damronjr »

I was driving home today about 10 minutes ago, which consists of driving off the base, 2-3 miles down a residential road, across the Coronado bridge, and down 2-3 miles to my house on residential streets. Doesn't sound to dangerous to me, considering some of the people I work with drive an hour or more every day! Well, apparently my Satellite 2004 Pontiac Vibe lowered on 19" Axis Spider rims is invisible, because some dumb B%&*) decided to change lanes into me while we were at the top of the bridge! I was in the right lane near the bridge wall and she was in the middle lane next to me. I saw her start to drift into me, but I thought she would correct and get back into her lane. Little did I know she was changing lanes, without signalling and obviously without looking! Fortunately there wasn't anyone behind me when I accidentally dropped the car into neutral and slammed on the brakes pulling slightly away from her but making sure not to hit the wall and go flying into the San Diego Bay! Needless to say, I was pissed! I came flying up the bridge behind her destined to ram her over the side for nearly taking me out, but stayed calm enough to get off and go home. My heart was pounding a million times per minute and I was shaking like crazy, but me and the Vibe made it out alive.

See, I would been thinking "f*** the Vibe, this bi*** has gotta go..." and just rear ended her...BUT....the damn airbags would get in the way....Then I'd wake up and see jeezus, someday karma better come around for that b***h.
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

I hate that, and I know what fury you must have felt once you realized you had successfully avoided the accident but all that adrenaline was still pumping. Regrettably, I have also been on the other end of encounters like that where I would have sworn there were no cars around me and started to change lanes only to find that I almost hit another car. That is pretty scary too.Glad that you and the car escaped, congratulations on reacting in time to avoid the accident. These cars are pretty nimble compared to some I've owned.

Wow, adrenaline rush for sure! I know I have had a few close calls from other drivers in this same situation... and oddly enough they always seem to happen on a bridge or where there is a steep drop-off from the road.Glad you escaped...

she would have gotten an ear full of horn thats for sure. For what ever thats worth since our horns are not that loud. But some people just don't pay attention, I know I have accidently almost done that myself a few years back, I signaled but didn't check. Thankfully their horn was loud haha.

LOUD (removed) HORNS. That's all I have to say. I've been in two situations where something similar has happened. Granted, not on bridges, and not plunging into the bay..but. The lane change thing, still. And that's with the stock, bright-(removed)-Lava vibe. Glad you're alright, and equally glad you kept your cool!

Wow, close call.Reminds me of one time when I was driving to Victoria from Sooke. There's a long stretch of 1 lane traffic each way with double line down the middle and I got stuck behind someone who would just slow down and speed up (down to 25km/hr on a 80km/hr road). It was dark and raining. We got to a 3 lane stretch of road with our side having a passing lane so I decide to pass him. Just as I'm about to overtake him, without signalling he veers into my lane. I hit the binders, take a quick look and notice there's nobody in the oncoming lane and steer away from him - he just kept coming. Turns out he'd just made a left hand turn from the right hand lane across the passing lane. If I'd had ABS I could have completely avoided him, however, as it turns out, my front passenger side creased his rear drivers side. When the police arrived, he tried lying about the situation and claim I was trying to pass him on a double line. A quick look at the skid marks proved otherwise and the officer threw the book at him. Ah, the adrenaline that was pumping that day.....

Scary stuff dude. It's sad that it sounds like similar things have happened to almost all of us. It happened to me and my girl last night in the Grand Am. I was the passenger and we were in the right lane. This truck in the lane next to us starts to drift over with out signaling. My girl panics and drifts into some debris on the shoulder then hit the brakes and got back on the road. She was scared to death. I was pissed. I asked her why she didn't use the horns on that a-hole?! She told me "well I didn't wan't to be mean". About a month ago the same thing happened to me in my Trix. I laid on my quad air horns as soon as he got 1 tire into my lane. It must've scared him because he swerved back into his lane and into the far lane, overcorrected, slammed on his brakes and almost hit the guard rail!

Bah... It was a near miss... No sweat... Funniest near miss I ever saw...I was a passenger in the back seat of an ex-GF's Hyundai Accent...and she started a lane change *after* looking...and *still* started drifting into a lady in a Honda (side by side, no less!)... It wasn't anywhere near a close call, but I still heard the lady in the Honda *shriek*.Through My (closed) window.Across 5' of lane.Through her (closed) window. At 45 mph.*eek*
