Does anyone use a VOIP service?

Post by Herb »

I was wondering how many people here are using a VOIP service. It seems to be picking up steam but I don't know very many people who are using it personally.I've been using one by Primus Canada for the last 6 months and it's been pretty handy.I've got a primary number for where I am locally (604) so I can make & receive calls, but I also subscribed to two alternate numbers with two different area codes (780) (403) so my friends in Edmonton & Calgary can call me locally. The cool thing about the service is that I can take it anywhere I go. For instance if I were to visit Japan, I could take my VOIP gateway and plug it into a high speed internet conection and I'd still have my regular phone service as if I were still here.Another example how this could be used is if let's say Hope had the service, she could have a local Ontario phone number and call Phill and vice versa and it would be a local phone call for both of them.Anyways here's a link to the provider I'm using that can give more info:http://www.primus.ca/en/reside....html

I used to have the Primus dial up before I got this SBC DSL. I noticed that Primus was much faster than any other dial ups I ever used.Inder

In short, it's a service that allows you to use a regular telephone to make phone calls over a high speed internet connection.Primus provides a device that allows you to plug a regular telephone handset into which then plugs into your cable or DSL modem. The service allows you to have a phone number with most major Canadian area codes as a primary number, and up to two alternate numbers with different area codes if you want.Primus calls their service TalkBroadband and it's not a dial up internet service, that's a separate service they also provide.

I use a cell-phone. I can bring it anywhere I want and have the same number. No roaming, no long distance, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited PCS to PCS, and I can even check my email on it! How do you like that for $40 a month?

BUMP! I just recently got VOIP. I am using Lingo. I cannot complain at all. It's 22.09 a month including tax. Long distance to the US, Canada and Western Europe are all included, plus there are a ton of other features, it's great. You can also take the box with you wherever you go and if there is broadband service, you can make a call and people can call you like you are calling from home. http://www.lingo.comCheck it out. If you are going to go with Lingo, IM me, if you let them know that I referred you, I get a credit towards my bill. The setup is simple, it's a lot easier than people think.

Yeah, I saw that. Around home, if I would need police or ambulance, I would dial the direct number. You can dial either but if you dial the township dispatch you get a faster response.
