Hi all, Today I was cleaning out/prepping my shadow vibe for an impending vacation when I happened to get a look at the roof. Low and behold, there were maybe 6-7 areas over the roof where the paint was flaking off (from the size of an eraser head to nearly the size of a dime). I've read through most of the paint related topics on the board but none really apply as also, the roof rack bar itself was also marked up (I guess the best way I can describe it is it looked like a scar, not deep, but as if the metal was melted, along with the roof rack framing showing signs of flaking. Shocked, I quickly went to the dealer, it was looked over but they're opinion was because of the damage to the roof rack bar itself, something highly caustic must have splashed on the roof, damaging only the roof paint and roof rack....basically, does this theory sound right or should I hold out hope for a second opinion in hopes of getting this covered under warranty? Pictures would help, but alas, I'm one of the few left without a digital camera...so if anything is overly incoherent, feel free to shoot follow up questions at me...Not looking forward to the $450-ish cost estimate to have the roof repaintedThanks to all in advance

From what you describe it somewhat does sound right considering the details. My Vibe, w/ 36k miles and over 2 yrs old, has not one blemish on the roof or rack nor have I read of anyone with any major problems with paint on that area. It does sound like something may have gotten on your roof and rack that caused some sort of deterioration of sorts.Quote »Pictures would help, but alas, I'm one of the few left without a digital camera...so if anything is overly incoherent, feel free to shoot follow up questions at me...Not looking forward to the $450-ish cost estimate to have the roof repaintedYes, pictures do help but your circumstances are understandable. If at all possible, try to get a friend or family member with a digital camera to snap a few pics for you to post up here, it wouldn't hurt. When did you notice the damage/paint loss first? How long ago? Does it seem to be contained to certain areas or spread out, like in a splash pattern? Lastly, has the deterioration stopped spreading or does it continue to appear in new spots?Welcome aboard to GenVibe, sorry to see your first post had to be of this nature but hope you get things taken care of.
Thanks for the quick reply,Quote, originally posted by NSimkins »When did you notice the damage/paint loss first? How long ago? Lastly, has the deterioration stopped spreading or does it continue to appear in new spots?Let's see...I first noticed it today after having it run through a car wash...in my initial freak out, I was ready to blame that for it, but the flaking/marks are confined to the roof, from between the front of the moon roof until the last roof rack bar.Luckily(at least so far) it appears confined to the roof area. At this point I'm hoping there was a splash of something or other driving under an overpass or something...as the alternative is a growing hatred for my neighbor's and their fondness for fireworks that has gone on way past the Fourth of July (They've still been lighting them on and off this week, long after I'd given up hiding the Vibe in the back of the driveway, out of the line of fire). And I guess I've learned my lesson, NEVER DRIVE OUTSIDE .Anyhow, thanks again for the input, figured as much as I didn't have any reason to disbelieve the dealership when considering the rack damage...but when a $450-ish bill is looming, hoping for a conspiracy theory of sorts can't hurt
I somehow accidently got a piece of duct tape on the fender above the wheel well and when I went to pull it up the tape actually caused the paint to detach from the plastic surface underneath and I didn't even pull it that hard Now you can move the paint around on that section of the car... oh well guess I might as well get it repainted later
if this is a new vibe take it back into the dealer. my paint cracked on my roof and they repainted it.GM will try anything to get out of repainting any part of the vibe, cause they know its such crappy paint and they don't want to pay out the money to cover nummi's screw up for using solvent based paint.

I would still go to the warranty rep at the dealer and talk to them, explain how it wasn't there before and you haven't used any caustic substances on or near the car. then have the dealer's paint shop to measure the paint thickness and have them look at it. you might want to get a second opinion from another dealer. the paint on a "2003 anything" should not be peeling off.

I guess I might as well have them go try to fix it although what do you think they will say about the decals? "The adhesive tape on teh back side is caustic!" lol
