buy 19's

Post by Smokin' Rubber »

Hey guys think I'm going to buy some 19's within this next week to replace my current rimsAnd I just realized with my current rims the speedometer actually reads 3% fast or so and getting the 35/19's will actually make it back to the orginal stock reading I had with the 17's. How do you think these would look on the Vibe (Shadow GT)http://www.custom-wheels-car-r...ortby=

Works for me. I prefer a slightly chunkier 5 spoke on a Vibe but not by that much.

Not bad.Simple. Stylish. Not a fan of that triangular thing at the end of the spoke...or the recess in the spoke, but overall, not a bad wheel!!!
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

19s don't leave much sidewall height to protect the rims from debris and potholes. There was a member from NJ who had them and said they were fine, no trouble at all. About a month later they were for sale: "two straight, two bent"

They look like my Centerline RPMs. How much do they weigh? If you can try to keep the weight down.

About a month later they were for sale: "two straight, two bent" Very true my first OEM set of 17" rims on the right side got the crap scraped out of them from having to parallel park at the university so much, luckly I got new ones with I broke my axel and suspension (I know for a 1.5 year old car it has taken alot of abuse ) and I've been better about scraping. As for the 19's you are right, but you know if 17's get scratched even 18's will too. I think the trick my be getting really wide tires so they kind of bludge a bit off the rim (as in the flat of the tire that touched the road is wider than the rim so the inside part of the tire is bent inwards to fit on the rim and yes that is safe as long as you don't get tires that really weren't meant to fit on that rim size. So if I have that buldge buffer it might be alright. I wonder how wide the tires would have to be on a 7.5" wide rim to get that.Maybe I should go with 245's

Those look pretty sweet. Nice choice. Hopefully that big of a size won't interfer with anything. I sure wouldn't want to spend that much on something that damages my car.

What you say is true about the section width of the tire, smokin, in fact some tires have a built-in ridge just to protect the rim from curbs, but I'm speaking of the distance from the tread to the rim, as in a 205/55 has a sidewall height of 205 mm x .55 = 112.5 mm or 4.44", so with a 16" rim, the tire diameter is ~16 + 4.44 + 4.44 = 24.9". A 19" tire having the same outside diameter would have a less than 3" high sidewall and thus it would be much easier to bend a rim on a sharp-edged pothole.

Oh you mean the amount of air cushioning hehe thought you were talking about scraping the rimsYeah I know with less sidewall and more pressure the actual tires absorb less of the impact and the rims takes more than a higher ratio tire (hence the harsher ride as well) I don't think it will be a big problem though just because there are not many pot holes around where I drive (WA state just spent millions and re-paved most of the roads). But, if I ever find myself in that situation you're probably right, I will be sorry. For now though I think I'll get the rims anyway, a friend of mine just opened a tire/rim shop and said he'd give them rims to me for a discount but I have to pay full price for tires so its gonna end up around $900 combined which is a good deal for 19's plus performance tires

I also wouldn't go with a tire that is wide for the rim. The sidewall actually gets softer and will make the rims more prone to impact damage. Get something that will fit the rim properly and run highish pressures. Tires with rim protectors work fine without being oversize. I'm with Madbill and think 19s are strtching it a bit.

Those things have to way more than 25 lbs. And if they do weigh that much at that price, it's gonna be bend city for the 19's!

And now the question is why would I even bother going from 18's to 19's when the tires will be the same ratio and width.... good question lol.....

Actually to keep your current diameter with 19s, the tie would have to be a 235/30 or 225/35 for closer to stock diameter. Anyway you look at it, you will lose some sidewall. Where did you get your tires. I can't find your size GS-D3 listed anywhere.

Doh! I just went into the garage and double checked the tires, they are 235/40's so I guess the sidewall would be getting shorter by more than I thought. I got ripped off lol... I orginially bought the tires thinking they were 35 ratio but thats only for 245 wide

I am also looking for 19" this one but all of you recommend 18" ah?I know that 235/35/19 match the stock http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Nice I started thinking about 19's again as well as to not stray from the stock sizing when I get 35 ratios. I think that they'll do fine as long as you don't live or drive in an area with alot of pot hole

And Racing Harts manufactured in Japan so better quility and they have 19s.did you get the 19th yet. Hey where is that shop in Seattle that you were talking about. LEt me know if it still exist b/c I also live in Seattle area. Thanks
