White plastic cone in air box

Doesn anyone know why it is there? I would think it would only hinder air getting into the intake.

I don't know about the GT, but the base Vibe has a white air bell with about a 1/4" mesh grid over it. The bell shape is to improve air flow into the downstream portion of the air box and I think the grid is to reduce turbulence/straighten the flow to give the mass airflow sensor a consistent sample. On other vehicles, removing such grids has been shown to help air flow and power, but there is a risk of screwing up the MAF readings...

I found it when I put the K&N in and took it off for one tank of gas, and then put it back in. I havent noticed any difference. But any way I can find to make the engine a little more responsive Im willing to try, especially if its free!

Based on test data I have seen on intake shapes, the bell likely adds about 5% air flow. Since the grid probably reduces the flow about the same or a bit more, removing the whole thing would have no effect except perhaps on the MAF reading. I think you would have to remove the grid but leave the bell. I had planned to price one (if they're sold separately) before I carved out the grid, JIC it didn't work.
