Am I covered by someone elses insurance in their car?

Post by Flip-Side »

My friend just got deployed and left me his car. He said I could drive it since my wife is going to Michigan in my car, and will be gone a month. My question is, will his insurance cover me driving his car...or is mine supose to? Last thing I need is some uninsured (half of all SC cars on the road) driver to hit me, and his insurance not to cover it.

no. his insurance will NOT cover you. it covers the owner or listed drivers and not just anyone in the car. otherwise, someone could steal your car and then use YOUR insurance to pay for all their med bills, etc.check with your insurance and see. if you're military, you're prob w/ USAA. they are pretty good at doing this and used to odd requests.

Thanks TRDvibe...thats what I figured. I don't have USAA, because Gieco Military insurance was cheaper for me. I'm 24, and I guess USAA gives better discounts to older guys. I'll just have to call Gieco to see what they say.

Hmm. That's interesting. I think our insurance laws are different in Canada. I've asked my insurance company (State Farm) about letting friends or family drive my car. They said it was okay if it wasn't a frequent occurence and the driver was over 25. However, if they get into an accident, it goes against my insurance record and my rates will go up (even if they are insured by the same company on their own cars). I never thought about what would happen if someone steals my car and gets into an accident.

My room mate risked this... let me drive his car for about 2 years and I was not under his insurance, stupid thing to do if I was a careless driver and all that but we had no incident. Only one he had was when he back into the car with the vehicle he was driving haha. But no his insurance would have needed to be extended to a secondary driver for me to be covered.Yeah TO meet, come on out.

You insure the car, not the driver. My car is insured no matter who drives it and I'm insured under the insurance of the car I'm driving. There are some insurances that specify who can and who can't drive the car but those are cheap insurances and don't have very good coverage.

I called my buddies insurance company (State Farm) for him, and they said that if I am the vehicles caretaker for a period when he is gone, I must be put on his insurance to be covered. But if he is simply letting me BORROW his car for random occurances, the car is covered. But if I wreck it, it will be on his record....not mine. So I will make some occasional trips to work....everyday, if you know what I mean. Same goes for my Gieco insurance. Ocassional drivers are fine, but they don't like it. They gave me the whole blurb how it should be me paying extra for bla bla bla. More money? No thanks, I pay enough already. And If I have to shrug and say it was just a one time occurance...so be it.

I will try to make it, but I might have some family thing that I have to go to on that day. I will do my best. Let me know if you need any help with scouting out locations and such. I live in the city so, it's not a big deal for me to check things out.

It should definitely be spelled out in black and white. Check the definitions i.e. Named Insured or "who is an insured", something like that. However, it's more likely that YOUR policy will cover YOU while driving his car.
