I would be interested to know about any simple, inexpensive modifications to increase the snap in my base Vibe 5 speed. I am not a mechanic nor handy with tools and I don't want to put my warranty in jeopardy. I look forward to your ideas.

I would say a CAI.You can buy one from Cosmo for around 150$.Very easy to install and you do not need any specific mecanic knowledge. A CAI is the cheapest way to get little power, beside NOS.NOS will give you a uge HP increase, but need an expert to install the system, and if it is not installed properly, it can cause a lot of damage on the engine.
I would also say cold air intake and add a Magnaflow exhaust. They will give you a hp increase of about 8hp each so you are looking at close to 20hp increase on those 2 mods. You can find both products at http://www.ptuning.com

Parts stores here rave about K and N air filters as an inexpensive HP and economy booster as well as high performance mufflers. Any other brands which anyone deems to be better or better value? Any thoughts on best muffler buys?

With a K&N drop in filter- little or no horepower gains are felt with our small engins- I have one and I have not noticed an increase in any power of gas milage to be honest with you.And for the most power- get a cat or axle back exhaust system over just a muffler- Bolt on mufflers add nothing but the most annoying sound IMO

AEM makes a great CAI.I would suggest a cat-back over axle back, and a 2 1/2" piping should be good for your Vibe, go to a 3" if you plan on using forced induction. You can also take your headers to a machine shop and have them ported and polished. A custom ground camshaft or crankshaft would help out as well, as would a set of pulleys (Water, oil, etc). Unorthodox makes some pulleys for Vibes that are good quality.
