New Michigan law for everyone to laugh at!!!

Post by Merzbow »

Well, I jsut found out today that there is a new sound law being passed here in Michigan...Your music must be at a level so that it cannot be heard from more than 10 feet away from the car...now tell me is this not a violation of our freedom? All those people that spent all that money on their precious sound systems I kind of feel bad for. I doubt any police officer will be a big enough @$$-hole to actually enforce such a law, but gimme a brek, ten feet isn't even as long as a car!!! They are beggining to destroy a culture and they have no right to do that...don't gimme all that "well if you don't like it move to Iraq" bull because right now I'm here in the US and the US is suposed to be a free country, since when can they regulate how loud your music is??? What's next...you can no longer buy custom wheels, or exhaust?!?!

You would be surprised. I think we have something similiar here in Iowa, but I think it is 50 feet or 100 feet. They will probably use that law mostly as a foothold to pull somebody over to catch them doing something else. (ie DUI or Drugs)You also have to look at it like second-hand smoke. Just because you want to listen to your music at an increadible volume doesn't mean that I want to hear it. It is more of a common courtesy law than trying to (removed) with people's freedoms.

When I was stationed in Oklahoma the distance was 25ft here in Ca I think is 50ft. I know friends that got tickets in OK and here in CA so I think cops will enforce it but most dont really care unless bored.

well, as long as that's all they pull you over for...I don't drink or do drugs so I should be alright, and I also don't have any pounding subwoofers...All I have to say is if I get a ticket for blasting my Led Zepplin I'm goin straight to the source.

That law is ok with me, but I think 32 feet would be ok since that is the roads right of way. ( meaning Thats how far from the center line that the state owns, at least of state highways)I have to admit there some Kids around here that have there radios up so loud that items in my china cabnet start moving around.I swear they see my house, and slow down and stop!Besides It might help save there hearing!I must be getting old! lolWait until they pass a new law on breathing, You pay a tax for each breath or they stop you from using there air.

I was using the Vibe stereo for some music while I worked on another car, and was surprise that opening the doors and the hatch didn't make much of a difference in how loud the music was outside the car. It seems like the Vibe does a poor job keeping the sound inside.

Just to let you know, its not a Michigan law. Thats a new law for the city of Detroit. Also, just about every city and township in Michigan has had some kind of noise ordinance on the books. I had a cop stop me in 1989 because my music was too loud. This new law probably won't be enforced that hard. The old law stated, I think, music should travel no more then 50 feet from the source. The 10 foot law will make it easier on the police. Think about it this way: A cop is sitting in his patrol car and you drive by at 35 mph with your stereo thumping. He pulls you over and tickets you. You can argue in court that he didn't hear you from 50 feet away, just when you drove past. The officer will have a hard time proving you were 50 feet away since your vehicle was moving at 51 feet per second (35mph).

PS Poopypants love your avatar I agree, Cops seem to be more interested in the quick ticket. They would sooner pull someone over in this town for having blue headlights then arrest the 12 year old across the street smoking a joint. Here in town we have a by-law that you can not use a business parkinglot unless your doing something in the store... But cops would rather enforce that by-law at 10pm at night when the stores have long been closed and no customers are there and ticket everyone for just standing around and talking then chase those same people down for doing burn outs in the street after they leave the parkinglot. In my opinion I'd rather have people causing no trouble and hanging out in a well lit parkinglot then ripping up and down the street in a dangerious fashion. Its pretty stupid.

Mavrik, that is kind of what I've been arguing about cruising around here near Detroit. We hang out roadside from parking lot to parking lot becuase we get kicked out of every lot we try to park in. I even bought a bunch of food at Right Aid Pharmacy and then sat in my car and ate it while watching hte cars drive by and still got b*tched at by the cops and the employees for loitering! I thought as long as you were doing buisness it was ok???One time I stopped in a lot to make a phone call to my mother and a cop pulled up on his loud speaker and ordered me to get out of the lot...i thought the idea now was to try and get people to stop driving while talking on the phone!?!?!??!?!ANYWAYS, back to the sound ordanance...I wasn't aware all of the states had laws like this so I gues it's not as big of a deal as I thought it was. Never the less it's still rediculous how they think they can regulate the volume of music. VibeGT6spd, I have a cd with an intro explaining their view of the future and it stated "The government has reserved the right to charge for oxygen usage" lol, pretty creepy, and wouldn't surprise me if some day that did happen.

Relating this to second hand smoke is pretty much how I see it.Just because you want to blast music and threaten your hearing - doesn't mean that I want to share in your "enjoyment" while I am sitting at a red light next to you.Let's look at this from an objective angle. When you are blasting your Led Zep, do you hear an ambulance coming toward you? Do you hear a guy honking at you? Can you hear trains coming? Ever wonder why bus drivers stop at train tracks AND OPEN THE DOOR? Answer: So the driver can both See and hear if a train is coming.Operating a vehicle is an interactive responsibility. The driver should be able to see, hear and sometimes feel their surroundings so they can safely operate their car/truck/van/bike. Whenever something prohibits said sight or hearing then it needs to be evaluated.Same goes for tinted windows. Same goes for cars with too much sound proofing (like high end luxury cars - they are sound proofed so much, its like being in a sensory deprivation chamber)Horns and sirens are for safety - music is optional. Which do you think is more important? Why do you think its illegal to have on headphones while driving? (in most places)The lawmakers have many legitimate reasons to restrict noise levels. How many legitimate reasons do you have for blasting music?Face it - live in a society which respects public safety and common courtesy. You also live in a society which allows you the freedom to complain all you want.

A whistle tip is a welded to the tip of an exhaust pipe. It's sole design is to make a really high pitched noise when the car is on.Sometimes the "noise" can be ear-piercing loud and be heard from many blocks away. They serve no purpose whatsoever, except to create a "look at me as I annoy the hell out of everyone" atmosphere. They are outlawed in Oakland.Bubb Rubb has become an internet icon... similar to William Hung and "The Star Wars kid".http://www.ebaumsworld.com/bubbrubb.htm ... tr...s.php

That's worse then the insert you can do for a blow-off valve sound. You put this piece on your tip and everytime you left on the gas, you hear, psshh. Like a turbo blow off valve sounds. I don't like it. For one, it reduces power, at least that's what my brother said. Tha's all I can think of right now.Inder Singh

No man, it can go both ways...This is suposed to be a free country which means having a car is a right, you ahve the right to freedom, you have the right to buy and own a car, you have the right to buy and own a house, so on and so forth. It is a priveledge to own a car and a house as well. When you say it is solely a priveledge to own and operate a car, or a priveledge to own a house, it makes it sound like the government owns the people of this country. Yes it is a priveledge, and a great one at that, however it is also our right as citizens of this country to do these things. As far as hearing sirens is concerned, alot of the time I see emergency vehicles cruisin around my area, they don't even have the sirens on, and when they do every once in a while they are still hard to hear even with the radio off and windows down just because of how the atmosphere around absorbs the sound.I personally don't like bass so loud you can't hear the wind outside the car while driving, and sometimes I get anoyed with the guy next to me in a Blazer "Extreme" that has 69 thousand 15" subs, but I mean a red light is what, 3o seconds to a minute maybe? I can live with it for that long, and if they feel like blowing out their ears than don't you think it should be their own responsibility?Sorry to sound snappy but I have strong opinions lol I'm not trying to be an A-holle about it.

Let me say it again. Emergency vehicles (or any vehicle for that matter) needs to be SEEN and HEARD. Let's say they are responding to a call and are driving with just lights. You happen not to see them, so they turn on a horn or siren. That means they are trying to tell you to please move out of the way. If you cannot hear them or cannot see them, then that is a receipe for trouble. Not to mention trains (see my bus example). Why do you think trains blow their horns when passing thru crossings? What good will blowing their horns do when some people in "bumpin" rides can't hear them? Remember the horn on your car is there for you to use to help you avoid accidents. If your stereo is so loud that you cannot hear others honking at you - then you are compromising yours and someone elses safety. Same applies if you are trying to honk at someone and they cannot hear you.Quote, originally posted by Merzbow »I personally don't like bass so loud you can't hear the wind outside the car while driving, and sometimes I get anoyed with the guy next to me in a Blazer "Extreme" that has 69 thousand 15" subs, but I mean a red light is what, 3o seconds to a minute maybe? Similar to how I don't mind if a smoker wants to waste themselves away by smoking. Just don't do it around me cause I don't want the second hand smoke.By using your own reasoning....If you want me to respect your "right" to make noise. You gotta respect my "right" to be quiet. Whatever you want to call it.... mutual respect, common courtesy....it is what governs in this case.If you want others to respect your "right" to make noise, but choose to ignore my "right" to be quiet, that makes you A) a hypocrite and B) Selfish.Quote, originally posted by Merzbow »Sorry to sound snappy but I have strong opinions lol I'm not trying to be an A-holle about it.I suggest that you stop for a moment and try and look at this objectively. Try and look at it from all sides and make a fair and impartial judgement.*****True story. When I was in high school, there was this guy who went to my rival school. He was famous for wearing huge headphones and blasting loud music thru them. When he had them on, you really had to try hard to get his attention. (tap him on the shoulder, wave your arms in front of him, etc)This one day, he was taking a short cut walking home. He decided to walk along the railroad tracks bordering the school. He was just minding his own business walking down the middle of the tracks with his famous headphones on when...He didn't realize that coming behind him was a train. The engineer had seen him from pretty far away and was blowing the horn to try and get his attention. Of course, he did not hear any horn cause he was lost in his own headphone world. The train engineer could do nothing but watch the massive train overtake the poor young man. At least he died quickly.I know this is not really a relevent example (headphones vs car), but I think it effectively illustrates a need to control noise levels.

You're right about the sirens and such. If I was one with a huge system I probably wouldn't have admitted However if you respect my right to make noise and I respect yours to be quiet it cancel eachother out and isn't possible unless I only blast music alone and turn it down while around other people. Which would work for me but for those hat buy systems solely to impress it isn't so simple to understand Fortunately this law doesn't affect me and apparently not you either so I don't think either of us truely have a problem with it being passed, I have no further arguements your honor (removed)

Fortunatly here in my town we have a sound law that takes effect in the evening... music can not be louder then a certain decibal (can't spell). Sound is not measured by how far away you can hear it. I like my music loud, I mean I hear whats going on around me, I hear my car, I could hear horns but I play my music loud. However you won't see me cruising through town with the windows down and hear every piece of my car vibrate thanks to the bass. Those people are stupid, not cool. My old room mate used to be in sound competitions in ontario with his cars when he was younger, he's pretty deaf now.

I am not going to get into a debate ! What I did was express my view point . If you do not agree --Fine ,but respect my opinion as I do yours. After all isn't that what a forum is all about? ---End Of Discussion. Have a Great Day ----Later - James (Vibe)

aww. now come on guys. i am willing to bet that this ordinance is more or less one they will use to help pull someone over if the suspect more illegal things like drugs or drunk driving, etc. that's what the cops do here. if they suspect you of something, but you're not really doing anything illegal, they will pull you over for a seatbelt or headlight.. etc.i doubt they will just give you a ticket cause of this. i think they have more important crimes to solve

Vibeya, and if they are pulling you over simply for this, then they should be trying to catch the real bad guys! not someone w/ a loud stereo. now granted, i can understand if you have the f bomb blaring out your speakers at 145 decibels in a neighborhood full of children. ok, that's understandable. or it's midnight and you are trying to sleep and the neighbor punk had eminem blaring full power. ok, i can see where i'd be calling the cops for this one!

I think some of these threads are getting a little fiesty now a days. No matter how much you want to get your point accross poeple have their ways and you wont change it. I have 2 12's and the bass is loud but I make sure its not loud enough to not hear sirens or for a cop to hear me a block away. I have tinted windows 10% on back and 20% in front it looks dark and hard to see in the car but hey thats what its for its super easy to see cars and emergency vehicles from the inside out.

i, for one, crank my music very loud. yep, i listen to that rap that most of you probably hate! i find it hilarious to sit next to old people at a traffic light and they hear the f-word like 3 times in 30 seconds, then they roll their windows up.i am serious.also, have some of our members not been getting their morning coffee or something? sheesh.

(you know what they are for - right?)Actually I'm a civil engineer with a specialty in roadway design and traffic engineering. (Can you tell?)With online forums like this, grammar is the main medium for which we communicate. If someone demonstrates poor grammar then that is the only way we have to get a reading on their general intelligence. So unfortunately when people use poor grammar on these internet forums, that translates to .... poor grammar = poor intelligence. If all I know about someone else is the words they type and if they type them incorrectly then it gives off the impression that either A) they are careless in their typing or B) they are not very intelligent. In reality that probably isn't the case as I am sure everyone here is very intelligent - they just may not spend very much effort in constructing their posts. If someone is intelligent, then they should have no problems with communicating it thru their writing.Proper grammar on the net is important. (See link below)http://www.albion.com/netiquette/rule5.htmlI am often guilty of misspelling words or typing sentences which don't make sense. Usually if I catch them - I will go back and edit them.If someone else catches them (as I am sure many people are re-reading my posts to check as I type this) then I admit defeat and move on.

i hate to get off topic, but grammar has nothing to do w/intelligence.that is confusing being smart w/being intelligent. 2 different thingsi routinely use poor grammar, not because i don't know better, but because that is how i talk
