It seems that you almost have to factory order the Vibe if you want the side airbags. I wonder why more of the cars don't show up with this option already installed? It's a nasty trend in the auto industry. I wish the Feds would step in and make it MANDATORY for all manufacturers to include ANY KNOWN safety feature as standard equipment.
i have side airbags and abs. up here most are equipped w/ abs and side airbags... maybe it's just the area. when i ordered my cougar back in 00 out of seattle, i also had a difficult time getting traction control and side airbags then. maybe it's a washington thing... dunno

The side air bags are an option that you pay extra for, you can get a GT without the side airbags. I think SAB and security system made up the "Protection Package". SAB is not usually the kind of thing that the dealer would install, either came from the factory or was ordered with them installed, although I guess you could install them after the fact if you wanted to.side air bags are not standard equipment on any Vibe model.

I had to search whole southern California to find one with side airbags and transfer it to a dealer near me. It is idiotic that just about any other option (including many that are useless) is easier to find than the side airbags. Keep searching and don't compromise!!

While I agree, I think if you surveyed most people, they'd say the first thing they would cut out of the car to save money is safety features. Usually, ABS and SIR systems are eliminated when it come to one of them or a cooler feature like premium sound. However, I suspect they will become standard soon enough...as the technology gets more advanced and cheaper...
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
i think it a good safty feature , but i don't think the goverment should step in, there is to much of that stuff now.

According to the brochure I got when I bought my '03, the side air bags are standard equipment on the AWD & GT. Same with the ABS. A block heater is standard on all 3. This is a Canadian brochure BTW.

IMO I never liked abs, it always acted up on my previous cars when it did not need to be coming on... a real annoyance. I have gone one winter with the Vibe without it and no problems, You just got to drive safely.

Would you have OnStar required? How about Cadillac's Night Vision? Some might say that movable pedals and a telescoping steering column are safety features. Should those be required, too? I see where some minivans have side curtain airbags. Require 'em? In Europe, many cars have headlights whose beam angle can be adjusted electrically by the driver. Should THAT safety feature be required? Some accidents are caused by low tire pressure. Should we require tire pressure monitors? How about requiring run-flat tires?Roll-bars? Electronic collision-avoidance systems? Do you REALLY want everything required? How much are you willing to PAY for a new car? As a driver, should you then be REQUIRED to keep all of that required equipment in good operating order?I can't stand people or their governments who take it on themselves to decide for me what is good for me.

I was pretty happy that my '03 AWD came standard with a lot of features. I don't like how the '05 is now priced. The base price is much cheaper, but now they are making you pay for all those items. I guess it makes it more comparable to the Matrix.
mine did not come eith them or the security suystem which pissed me off, because i wanted both I got the first 03 gt they had at the dealer hear they had it at sema for some reason, but it did come with tint on all windows and 18"s and red fade to black flames I had them remove the 18"s and the flames. the 18"s they wanted 2 gs for and they were way to chrome for me and the flames well they were just gay.

Actually they are making low tire pressure monitors mandatory in the next couple of years. I think it was because of the whole ExplorerFirestone thing.I have side air bags in my Vibe and my wife has then in here Windstar. Our last couple of cars have had them.Greg
