Roof Rack

Post by Mr. Poopypants »

I snowboard alot and I want to get a roof rack for my Vibe. I don't like the GM rack plus it is pretty costly. Does anyone know if there is one out there that looks good and isn't too expensive?

you can get racks from Yakima and Thule which use the existing lateral bars. Just need to buy adapters to wrap around the bars. I picked up a Yakima rack w/ locks and adapters for about $120 form REI. BobMono Shadow GT

I don't think the factory price is that bad. Remember, they are selling you two cross bars and four feet before they will sell you the rack. Factory price for the Thule bars and feet was about $200 US, factory is about $110 US. It will look ugly for sure, BUT it should get all our bindings up away from the roof. Our shaped skis are extra high and with our Olds Van ( the trade in) using the factory bars and my Thule rack I have about a 1/16 of clerarance. Let everyone know what you decide, because at this point ski racks and snow tires are the critical accessories.Richard Boise

I think having to add cross bars to the existing rack looks very ugly, not to mention the extra cost. I just purchased adapters (from Yakima) that hook onto the factory cross bars then my Yakima ski rack attachs to those. So the end result is that the rack looks like it actually belongs on the car rather than something that just fell out of the sky. This might not work though if you have large bindings as the rack does sit fairly close to the roof. I have x-country skis so it's not a problem for me. Also, it's a tight fit to get the adapters onto the factory crossbar because the bars are so close to the roof. But if I press down on the roof I am just able to turn the nut on.

I think aftermarket racks look much better.
