Mileage from Trip

I just got back from my trip to Alabama and Florida last night. It was great and I added about 2,000 miles to my Vibe (now around 18k total). My gas mileage was pretty good. My best was 34.57 mpg , lowest 29.17. Overall average was close to 32 mpg. My last tank which was 34.57 mpg, I had the A/C on for about the first half of the tank. With the EPA rating of 25/32, I'm happy with my results. The intake was nice, giving me a bit more power for the mountain climbs and passing on back roads. Just drop into a lower gear and scream by the slow pokes, that sure was fun .Now I just need to wash my Vibe, get all those bugs off .

In my experience, the mileage varies in part because the "fill" on the tank can vary. I know you are not supposed to do this, but I needed to maximize my miles to the next gas station stop and was able to put an entire extra gallon in the tank after the first automatic cutoff from the pump. Driving 65-75mph I usually get the 31mpg claimed on the window sticker. Perhaps at 55mph I could get 34mpg but I always doubted the claim that mpg was better at this slower speed.

Believe it or not, it's actually true. MPG is like a bell curve...the optimal efficiency is in the 40-60 mph range...anything above or below that starts detracting from your fuel efficiency... "What Speed Should I Drive To Get Maximum Fuel Efficiency"

justin, what was your avg speed? and did you pass a lot of cars too?here, we have our highways, but they are 2 lanes. if you pass, you are passing across a dotted yellow line before the oncoming traffic hits you head on. ask mavrik about that one. LOL. so i find that i'm dropping it into 4th or 5th and hitting lift as i fly by.... i think i still avg'd about 28 mpg and doing an avg speed of about 85 mph

On my recent trip from Oklahoma to Minnesota, I averaged 34.4 MPG. This is doing 70-75 with the A/C on, running on 87 octane (except in Iowa, where 89 is cheaper because of ethanol).I have a base with an auto as well.......

Reviving an old thread yet again... We completed a 7-day 1481 mile vacation from Central Indiana to Fenton MI, Detroit MI, Toronto ON, Niagara Falls ON, Hamburg NY, Cleveland OH, and back home in '03 our base/automatic (~27,200 total miles) with 3 passengers and loads of luggage. Just prior to the trip, I had the oil (5W30 Syn-Blend) & filter changed.Worst - 29.64 mpg (First tank - 40% city-only driving before leaving town)Best - 37.64 mpg (Last Tank - 264 miles of 99% freeway driving through Ohio & Indiana with the cruise set on 70 mph and the AC on about half the time)Trip Average (90% freeway)- 32.99 mpg

Just got back from Colorado. Averaged about 32 mpg. That's going over Rabbit Ears Pass in by Steamboat a couple of times and Fox Park in Wyoming. Best I did was a little over 34 mpg. This is running about 70mph. I have a GT and did a lot of downshifting to pass cars on the mountain roads. Had the AC on pretty much the whole trip.

Hey Hope and everyone,Sorry to get back to this so late, I haven't been on here in a long time. To answer your questions:It's going on a year now, but I think I normally cruised around 70-80mph. The highways were like 2-3 lanes most of the time per direction. I was probably passing cars and trucks, but not real aggressively. I still track my mileage on every tank, and I have been consistently getting 29 mpg with my everyday driving around here. That means, combination of city/highway, not much above 65, lots of stop lights, but not much stand still.Later,

For an experiment, in the month of May I TRIED to get the lowest mileage I could and only managed a pitiful 20mpg. This was a lot of Lift and melted rubber. Now when I do my normal driving, wich is about 80% highway I seldom get below 30Mpg (and never once have I got above 33mpg) it is an almost constant thing.. I was actually very pleased with this as I expected only mid tweenties.. these cars are pretty fuel effecient
