help me buy a car

Post by philndz »

Ok....bear w/ me...i know this is a little weird. I would like to buy a car. My car will be gone for two weeks+ for hail damage repair. I have no rental compensation on my insurance and im too young to rent myself. I could pay the rental fee for a someone over 25 and then borrow their vehicle while they use the rental....but thats gonna cost quite a bit. I can buy a car for $3-500. If i did this and drove it for two weeks and then put it up for sale....would i even have to deal w/ insurance....i mean if i wanted to get a insurance policy on the new car then it would probably take more than two weeks for the paperwork to go through??How do I do this?....is is legal? What about plates....this would be a private sale but do i get temp tags from the dmv?....and they are good for 30 days right? so do i have to register the vehicle etc....i know i would have to pay the tax right?any other concerns i should have....the nice thing about doing this is that I can sell the car and probably not lose any $ at all....rather than being out $400 for a rental.thanks for the help!

Not sure about other states, but NJ mandates all moving vehicles have insurance coverage. It's a BIG deal if you're caught without insurance...I honestly think you're asking for more trouble than necessary...that's just MHO though...insurance will typically cover rental cost if they're paying a claim...so if they're paying for the car to be fixed, they'll usually pay for the rental. Now I know you're underage...but maybe you can strike a deal with the insurance company. In Colorado, I"m renting a car underage, and paying $10 a day.Maybe if you can get your insurance company to cover a rental, you can agree to pay the $10 a day for underage fee (or whatever the deal is out there)?

nah...i simply do not have the rental compensation in my policy...it costs extra and i chose not to pay for it.surely there is some way i can do this...i have full coverage so i could jump in your vibe and be fully insured....so if a car w/o a policy cant be on the road then how would i legally even drive the new car home after i purchase it??whats the loop hole....a time period maybe?like you have to have insure that particular car within two weeks or 30 days or something?i just dont know how this works

I don't remember what mine costs, but its a fair bit more than that. The main reason I don't have it is because I never updated my policy when I turned 18 3yrs ago. Before then it wasn't even an option b/c under 18 can't get a rental even if its third party paid. I probably should have updated the policy...but it slipped my mind i guess....now im just going to suck it up and deal w/ it.
