what is a resonator for?

You know I was just thinking about exhaust systems today and I realized I know what everything else along the line does, but what the heck is the resonator for? Does it actually do anything important? (noise suppression is questionable when it comes to importance)

My information tells me the exhaust resonator is pretty much for sound deadening purposes only...but that it works in conjunction with the cat and the muffler, and shouldn't be removed (if you're thinking about it). Removing it will yield insignificant, if any, power gains (again, just in case anyone is thinking about it).

Eh, thats what I figured, oh well doesn't seem of much use but I wasn't actually going to cut it off since mine already has 70 mm piping anyway.
