16" or 17" Wheels?? ABS???

Post by Bobbyg123 »

I'm pulling the trigger and ordering a Base Vibe tomorrow with all of the features I want. As this car is for my wife and will be our second vehicle, I'm opting for the base engine for higher gas milage and regular octane fuel. I am interested in adding some other features that I'd like your opinions on. I'll list what I (she) has to have and what we're considering...2005 Base Vibe 5-sp (Fusion Orange Monotone)Moon & Tunes PackagePower Group PackageRestraint SystemTire Pressure MonitorRear Bumper ProtectorStrongly considering the ABS brakes and either the 16" or 17" wheels. I'm curious to hear what you guys think of the ABS and larger wheels. I need to talk with a "gear head" to find out how much performance will be gained/lost without them. Thanks in advance.

After having ABS on my last few vehicles, I wouldn't get a car without them. ABS has saved my (removed) more than once on slippery winter roads. As for wheels, get the base 16" steel wheel if you plan on putting aftermarket wheels on later, but if you plan on staying stock like me spring for the 16" or 17" alloys.

I have ABS on mine, and I only have noticed them a couple of times. I think that the tires and vehicle makes braking better, and not sure if I would add to my next Vibe. In my Venture and Yukon XL, I hear/feel them working much more when you are braking on rough payment. (And in metro Detroit, that is mostly what you find.)I would suggest that you call your insurance company, and price out insurance without ABS, and with ABS, side air bags, and theft protection system. Mine was much cheaper (+10%) with these items, so they pay for themselves over time.

I think the 16s look better than the 17s in this case. Nothing wrong with 17s but I just don't care for Pontiacs' and in WA. the 16s will be better in winter. More rubber will have higher limits but a progress rear bar does more to balance the car. If your not going to do any other mods I would just get the 16's or aftermarket 17s if that's the appearence you're looking for. ABS is worth it and something you can't get after purchase.

I'll also vouch for the ABS. It does come in handy, especially if you've been driving a car that has it. Remembering to pump is an extra step that most people tend to forget these days.As for the 17"s. I have them, and like them. But, if you want something really stylish, go with the cheapest wheel option you can get up front, and take the savings directly to a wheel place and get something aftermarket. There're a lot of choices in that regard, and you're sure to get something you like.Again, I ended up with the 17"s, and I do like them. I actually think I need something a little bigger to really "fill" the wheelwell..but, if that's not a concern...
