XM and various stock radio questions...

Post by hjwii »

Riddle me this: in 2005 Vibes, it's possible to get XM radio, but not with the 6 cd changer; however in 2004, you could get XM with the 6 cd changer, but not with the M&T, although now you can get the 6 cd changer with M&T...So... is the "no XM w/ the 6cd" a hardware problem, or is it one of those things like "you can only get floor mats if you also purchase the power windows and undercoating". Can I talk the dealership into giving me the cd changer w/ the factory XM?Next question, again regarding XM and Pontiac radios: I noticed the the Sunfires on the lot had both XM and mp3 player radios. Any reason why this won;t fit in the Vibe? And, finally... can the factory XM antenna be used with after market XM radios?Once again, thanks for your help...hjwii

My guess is it's some sort of hardware thing. I couldn't begin to explain what they would've changed in the 05 indash 6-cd that you couldn't have XM, so i'm not sure.. You might be able to see if they can do it, but the dealer can't do much about XM, it's a factory option ONLY.I don't think you can move the '02-current Sunfire radios to the Vibe because I think the Sunfire's use the GM DataBus system, and the Vibe's don't. (At least, I don't think the '05s do..they might've changed it.) There's a few wiring differences between them, and I believe the DataBus radios won't run in a car without DataBus. I think the factory XM antenna can connect to certain aftermarket radios. As far as I know, they use fairly standard connectors (With slight modifications, depending on the radio)

I didn't think it had traditional wiring like the off-the-shelf xm systems...

Look for units that have a "Band" selector, rather than "AM/FM". This is definitely a "hardware" issue and not a packaging issue.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »2. The 6 CD In Dash HU does not support XM Capabilities (??)Right. Again, the HU must have a "Band" selector, which the 6-CD changer units do not.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »3. The 6 CD Changer is under the passenger seatNo. The 6-CD changer is integrated into the HU.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »4. The Tunes Part (AMP) is located under the passenger seatYes; here's some more info here:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=10847Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »5. You can only have one, the 6 CD Changer or the Tunes (AMP) because they take the place of each other. No; you CAN use both the 6-CD changer HU and the 200 watt amplifier. I know, because I've actually done it.Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »6. Is it possible to get a 6 CD Changer and a Single CD HU with XM (???), but yet you are back to the entire thing where you will nothave Moon/Tunes Package.Um...no because that assumes the changer is separate from the HU.And I don't know if the antenna is compatible with other XM receivers.

Quote, originally posted by ZubenElGenubi »No. The 6-CD changer is integrated into the HU.There is an second type of external 6 cd changer that is installed with the navigation system, because the nav system has only one disc slot, which is typically occupied by the nav disc.In those cases, you can't have a 200W amp, because they do occupy the same space.

Mike: AFAIK, the Stock XM antenna is capable of connecting the older style Sony antenna connectors (basically, without those colored sleeves the newer Delphi units use). This is the impression i've gotten from some stuff over at XMFan. Because of the way the XM antenna wires must be built, they aren't integrated into any other thing..Again, only AFAIK..

That would be one of the first smart things GM has done in a long time! I hope that's the case...

Yeah, the NAV system they show is also running MUCH better software than what's available with it.They just take pictures, whether or not its a production thing. It looks like you can only get Factory XM with M&T.

So, you can get XM only w/ M&T... and you can now get the 6 in dash cd player w/ M&T... but you can't get the XM w/ the 6 in dash ?? You would think Pontiac would gladly want the extra money... Is it so wrong of me to want all the toys??hjwii

It may be outta pontiac's hands...Perhaps delphi hasn't upgraded the 6 disc unit's firmware to handle XM yet? Just speculation...I'd like to think there's a decent reason though...Maybe johnsoax can shed some light, IIRC he knows someone at Delphi...As an aside, I'm pretty sure XM was not offered in the 04 models...pretty sure 05 is the first year it's being offered.
