Gasoline smell...

Post by Neptune! »

I have my Vibe for 3 months now, and drove about 6 000 km so far.In the last 7 days my car had smell of gasoline 3 times.First, a week ago, I parked and got off the car. I then noticed a smell of gas on the left side. I removed and replaced the gas filler cap. Then I did not smell anything for a few days. I thought the filler cap was the problems. This morning I started the car and got out to brush off the snow. Immediately I had a gas smell coming from the hood. After a few minutes the smell stopped. Finally, tonight, coming back home, I stopped at a traffic light. I then got this gasoline smell inside the car. By the time I stopped at the next shopping centre, there was no more gas smell.Anybody have an idea what the problem is and what I should do about it?P.S. Yes, I have sulfur smell in the car (while driving) about ounce a week.

I had the same problem years ago with an Olds. I took it back to the dealer 3 times, the first 2 they replaced the gas cap and checked fuel lines. Since we have an attached garage the smell, although faint, was in the house when the car was parked in the garage. The 3rd time I took day off work and said I would be in the waiting room while they did their inspection. The service manager came over an hour later and said there was nothing wrong. I said I wanted to speak to the mechanic. He brought him over and introduced him as a 25 year experienced master mechanic. I ask him how he did the inspection since he didn't find the source. I explained how the odor appears after sitting in an inclosed garage a few hours. He immediately said to find an faint odor like that he'd have to pull the gas tank and do a pressure test like one does on a radiator. I told him I'd be in the waitng room and I've got all day. An hour later they found the hairline crack in the seam of the gas tank.

i had been noticing the same thing the past few weeks. at first I thought it was the clunkers I parked next to, but this past weekend while tailgating in Ann Arbor (Go Blue!) I realized it was my car. I didn't think it was because of overfilling since the tank was at about 3/4 full. Prior to noticing the smell, I had done a bit of back and forth driving to situate my car in the parking spot. Maybe the sloshing is what causes it? My car is currently at the dealer to get some cosmetic damage fixed (oops!). Will have the service people look at it afterwards. BobMono Shadow GT

Well got my car back from the dealer. Sure enough - could not reproduce the problem! Even though I probably couldn't reproduce the problem myself. Interesting thing, this is the first time (out of 3 issues) I actually got a call back from somebody at the dealer to find out if the problem was solved. Hmmm, maybe something to do with fuel systems? Hopefully I'll be able to figure out a pattern to this concern.BobMono Shadow GT
