I have ADHD and I use dexadrine to treat. Works very well. I would definately be interested in the extra $200 a month just to cover the medication as it's not cheap.EDIT: OK...I did a little research and discovered that in order to receive SSI, you cannot be working. If you are working, there is still a chance you might receive SSI, but you must appeal. Sounds like too much work for me.

i had a buddy who was a big time pot smoker, so naturally, he never focused on anything and was always off somewhere. of course, he was diagnosed with ADD. which calls for medicine. which calls for repeated visits to the doctor to get refills. which calls for more money in the doctors pocket.anyone catch on?

Well...I've never smoked pot. I've taken some tests (questionnaire type) that seem to suggest I've got AADD, but I have no desire to be medicated. Not that I'm a Christian Scientist or anything, just don't want to be doped up.Where was I? Oh yeah, seems to me that if you're not working, $200 a week isn't really worth it.

I swear I would've been diagnosed with ADD when I was a kid, if there had been such a thing back then. Never paid attention in school. As it turns out, I was just bored

(not NY pete)gimme a break! actually, dman, SAD is very much a problem in the winter here in alaska. depression of this caliber is not just feeling blue because it's winter and cold. SAD diagnosis are quite complex. have you ever suffered from depression? do you know anyone that has? clinical depression is extremely frustrating for not just the person going thru it but everyone around them. it's not a pretend feeling or a way to get attention. my mom suffers from SAD and we have to put in special lighting in our kitchen, the walls are all painted a bright white, she takes an anti depressant and varies other things to help reduce the effects. in barrow (the northern most inhabited town in the US) has one of the highest rates per capita in the nation for this very reason. when there is no sun for 3 months (and i mean you don't even see it in the horizon), people react in funny ways! adhd is also an extreme condition. it's not just being hyper or full of energy. most people w/ adhd didn't just go to the dr's and given ridlen or other meds! people w/ this condition find it extremely hard to concentrate on one task at one time. that's why you see them multi tasking or working on several diff projects at the same time. often times they have a very difficult time w/ school and grades. my ex had adhd. he was extremely intelligent, but when it came to school grades he looked like a flunky! in fact, he flunked out of high school and didn't graduate. i graduated w/ honors and in the top 5% of my class of 424 seniors! when it came to SAT scores, he scored the same as me, 1260!

wow! i'm glad you guys were not my doc when i was going thru my depression 4 yrs ago! i'd certainly have jumped off that bridge i stared at for hours! just my $.02but i'd agree w/ you on the $200. i had to pay for my meds...and add or adhd to me doesn't warrant social security pmts! that's like giving anyone w/ bipolar or manic depression $200 a month!

I don't believe that you can collect the Social Security money if you have a job where you have filled out a W-2. My friend has an illness that I can't remember off the top of my head and he receives $400 dollars a month. Without going into details it drives me crazy that he doesn't get a job and move out of his Mom's house. You can take home more money than $400 dollars with a crappy part time job.

Comments......welling........up......must....let......out........AAAAAAAAAGHOK here's the deal. There are way too many health "problems" that doctors are diagnosing. FOR EXAMPLE!!! I have seasonal alergies, this is a fact, but why my doctor prescribes me allergy medicine that I can get OVER THE COUNTER (clarinex, claritin) and an inhaler, because apparently all of a sudden I'm asthmatic, and a nasal spray I'll never know. Why not tell me to go out get a box of Claritin and a box of Kleenex, It will be a whole hell of a lot cheaper. THEN if that isn't bad enough, I was talking to my doctor and told him I'd been getting tension headaches at work, IT'S CALLED STRESS, but he says, fill this test out for me, and walks out of the room, it's a damn depression test, of which MAYBE I answered 2 or 3 with something other than the normal person answer, so he looks at it and goes........You have mild depression..................(removed)! Maybe it's a little thing that they used to call being in a rut, you get into a rut, you go out with some friends, play some golf, do whatever you need to do to blow off steam. How does he know he didn't catch me on a bad day? Before prozac, zoloft, yadayadayada you almost never heard of everyone being "mildly depressed" now everyone is apparently, BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO GIVE EVERYONE ANTIDEPRESSANTS. So anyway, he gives me a mild upper, which does nothing for me, until I took myself off of it, after I stopped taking it, I actually started feeling more upbeat, maybe because I was just in a little funk and I got myself out of it. My point is, doctors are making everyone hypochondriacs (sp?) and prescribing medicines that most people really don't need.

very true. many doctors are over diagnosing. which really is too bad when there are more severe cases. i was on antidepressants for 2 yrs. and i needed them. something about wanting to jump off a bridge and commenting about it apparently makes you suicidal. it's now been 2 yrs since i've been off of them. doing really well, sometimes i do have some relapses, but i've learned to recognize them and know when i need to talk to someone about it.i don't know about add, because i was never diagnosed w/ it. many of my teachers growing up thought i had it, but nothing to cause alarm. i was just a little hyper and liked to do many things at one time.. read, talk, draw, write.. whatever to keep my hands busy. but i've seen some extreme cases of add and dyslexia, etc. it's sad to see people struggle so hard to concentrate!

when our grandparents had a bad day, month, week, or year, they didn't pop a pill to ease the probs, they sucked it up and dealt with life. life's a b-word, then you marry one!

Well, I know that I used to take, no joke, at least 12 pills a day for depression and ADD, and I never really was told to stop taking them, I just stopped because of the changes they made in my personality. I can and do work, I was just wondering as to how she was doing that. She doesn't have ADD bad, actually, if I were to guess I wouldn't think she had it at all. The only thing that would keep her from being employedis that she's literally crazy. You could be talking to her, she could be laughing, in a good mood, then she'd randomly get pissed and throw something at you/etc.

Quote, originally posted by silverawd26 »It is a disease, plain and simple.I have to agree with Silver on this issue. About six years ago, when I lived in SC, I worked in a facility that was being provided by the local community college. In this facility, we tutored and worked with people who had some sort of learning disability (physical and mental) or were first generation college students. I met a lot of people who had been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, retardation and many other problems. The levels of ADD and ADHD varied from student to student. There were some students who didn't appear to have the disease, but were some of the worst cases. There were nights I would drive home crying because of the level of frustration some of the students would exhibit. After spending time around these wonderful people, I agree with Silver, it is a disease. However, I do tend to agree that it is misdiagnosed to many times. My friend's son was diagnosed with ADHD and it turned out he was having an alergic reaction to sugar. Go figure.
