ok this is my first post so please go easy on me ok? My wife and I just got told by the GM dealer our brakes are worn down to 2 mm.(This after almost a year of them telling us the squeek was brake dust).This comeing as we had the oe tires(continental) replaced with coopers,because they where down to wear bars.The mileage just turned 30000.Am I right to be...concerned?Will i have to get tires and brakes replaced next year?We barelly have had the car a year and a half.Any body else with thoughts?
wow! yes, 30K miles is a bit early for brakes, but as i experience in my tundra, the toyo brakes wear fast! when it comes time to replace the brake pads, i'd install some nice performance pads like green stuff. i believe psychobroker installed them on his. as for the contis, you will see many threads on how crappy the OEM contis are w/ the premature wear. your new coopers should be just fine for awhile.
You should get at least 50k out of a set of front brakes. But, if you can replace them yourself (and if you can't, they aren't that hard), just go to autozone and pick up some pads with a lifetime guarantee. After that, when they go bad, you take them back for new ones for free!As for the tires, it depends on how often you rotated them. I have had them last anywhere from 33k (96 Camaro) to 66k on my wife's Grand Am GT. Of course these are the Eagle RS-A'S, But I don't know why the Cooper's should be repaced at 30 unless they weren't rotated.How did they wear? Even? in the middle? On either side?
Well not wanting to be the party pooper here with the "oh yes brakes should last longer then 30,000" but in most cases they don't on these new cars. I see Sunfires, Grand Am, Cavaliers and Grand Prix with worn out brakes starting at about 30,000 and up. Brakes are not made from what they used to and apparently now they don't come with much. All I can say is lots of city driving and your screwed... unless you go get them done at a life time warranty place cause GM's life time warranty parts are $$$ Yeah I explain this to every customer with brake squeak... it is caused from dust (refer back to this new material they are made from) reacts to dust and moisture. But they also wear out but its unrelated to the brakes.Now you might be able to convince them to replace these under warranty? If your a pretty faithful customer, some dealers will do a good will favour for you if the mileage is low since GM doesn't warranty original brake parts for very long.

WELL....at least the OE tires are free.....sort of.Here is a good place (if you don't know about it already) to get tires....(already on the Vibe page for 16" tires).http://www.tirerack.com/tires/...00_=4They have some Kumho's and Sumitomo's for about $60 a tire.
well, as you experienced last weekend, w/ my driving style, i expect to go thru my brakes at about 30K miles. at that time (probably next summer) will replace all brakes and rotors w/ cross drilled brembos and most likely green stuff pads

The Malibu I had would eat through a set of pads and rotors up front like there was no tomorrow... Ended up replacing the original pads around 25K. Couldn't win for losing, a softer set of pads would wear out quickly, while the more expensive pads chewed up the rotors. Ended up buying a new set of rotors around 60K and a set of Raybestos QuietStop ceramic pads- those were great. They were still in good shape when I got rid of the car.So, I'm more than pleased with the Vibe's brakes, almost 37K and still holding up fine. I've tried my best to be as easy on them as I can, kicking off the OD and letting the engine slow the car down when in a really hilly area... So far so good. But I'll probably have the brakes changed within the next 10K just to be on the safe side.

I had the the Vibe in to the tire place a while ago (to get the tires rotated & an oil change, so it was probably the 120,000 km mark). When I got the tires (Pirelli's) the 18 year old dude commented that my brakes were 75% done ... implying I'd need new brakes around 100,000 km (the new tires were installed @ ~ 72,000 km).Well, they told me that my brakes were just fine, they just needed an adjustment (which they did for free). So, my car is approaching 76,000 miles, and I'm still on the original brakes. I do pretty much all highway driving, so I'm not surprised. City driving will be way worse on brake pads & rotors.
