issue with download time of oversize pics

Post by noginsk »

I have a suggestion to help all of us dialup users. I have a hell of a long wait when I dowload images. Not just this site, but any site. Maybe there could be a way to limit the size (bytes) of pictures that are linked? Maybe people could be asked to not go over a certain size? Maybe there could be a way for genvibe to "downgrade" the size of pice for dial up users that we could set up in the "my profile" section?Just a thought

I have had cable internet access for a number of years now, but I remember the days of 1200 baud modems and dialing up bbs's, so I fully understand and remember others out there don't have broadband access.I try to reduce the size of my pictures (both dimensions and file size) to 640 x 480 or so and reduce the dpi or compression, whatever your paint program calls it so I get about a 65kb or so file size. It still looks decent, and comes through in a fraction of the time as the original picture's 1.5mb size. By reducing the picture file sizes, it also makes the forum owners happier due to the reduced bandwidth needed.

i thought we had a limit on picture size already? i run both cable and dial up at times. on my dial up, it's a little slower, but not bad, only when there are 20 pics in the thread do i have issues.

I use aol, don't know if that is an issue. I think the local dialup numbers here are pretty bad too, so that may play a role. When there is a pic that I want to see, and it is bigger than the screen so you have to scroll to see it, I usually have to wait about 2-3 minutes before I can see the whole thing. It's probably just my ISP though.

Its nice to have a right size picture that you open and the whole image fits in a screen without scrolling.
