Gas Mileage?

Post by nismo »

Well,I've had my Vibe about 6-8 months now and I have noticed that my gas mileage is not all that great. Thinking that I own a four-cylinder 1.8 liter engine car I would be getting like 28-32. Instead I get like 21-26. Is it jus me or does the Vibe/Matrix not get great gas mileage for being a 1.8. My cuzin has a Ford Escort and he gets like 32. That's a 2.0. I don't know.Inder Singh

That's poor mileage. I get 36mpg highway at 65-70mph on a Canadian gallon. Combined driving I get about 33mpg.

I'm in the same boat you are. I've had my vibe for 5 months now. My overall gas milage over that time is 22.37 US mpg. Mind you it is slowly breaking in. As of lately I've been getting 25-28 mpg. Never have hit 30 .

I have about 10400 miles on my car now. I have yet to see an improvement in my gas mileage. When I do beat on my car, it usually gets about 21-23. Which is pretty bad. I don't know, is there something wrong with some of these cars or is it jus me and renik that have this problem.Inder

Your intake is likely killing your efficiency. While a few have reported improved fuel economy with intakes installed, I think more see a decrease in MPG than don't...Also depends on the fuel you use, some seem to perform better than others.I usually get int he ballpark of 27-30...Never have hit 36 like some though. I have too much of a lead foot.

Yeah, I need to invest in real intake system. The intake I have on my car right now is off of a 2001 Corolla. Same motor size and everything. Just the intake layout is different. I had to use half of my stock hosing. So, filter, WAI, then stock hosing, and then the motor. Could this be my problem? If it is, I will buy a new intake ASAP. Prolly go with the COSMO Racing intake. I've been able to get 39+ mpg on my last two tanks. My Vibe has about 7K miles on it. My driving is mostly open road and some stop and go.

Hi Inder et al...I would be concerned with that mileage even though I have a GT. I would expect lower MPG in the Winter for obvious reasons but I was fortunate to not get much below 24 MPG or so. I get 30-32 in Highway driving and usually closer to 27 when it's mostly city in the GT (US MPG). I think I'd be taking it in or putting the stock intake back in to see if that was the problem. I think some have suggested resetting the computer by disconnecting the neg on the battery for a like 10 minutes or so. Might want to do that.I do notice though that I'll get 1 tank at 30-33MP then the next tank about 5 MPG lower even if my driving is the same. I've started checking every 2 fill-ups, combining the miles and gallons used over the 2 and have been getting a more consistent MPG per check. I check this almost every other fill-up too.Dave

TRD4reel--is this city, hiway or combined driving? My average hiway (75-80mph) mileage is 35.4 mpg US. I don't drive "city miles" so don't know that.

I've got an average of 37mpg(90% highway, 10%city) on last fill on premium but I usually get arround 35mpg driving 70-75mph. I'm no expert but it seems TRD4reel that you might have a prob with you're intake... If i'm not mistaken an improperly center oxygen censor will wreck havic on performance and milage because it can't get an acurate reading. Just something you can check but then again it might just be your driving style. Do you keep you engine at or shift at high revs?

I purchased my used base Vibe/automatic with 22k miles on the clock on Feb 4th, 2004. I'm now just over 25k miles. My running average mpg is 26.93.Since a picture is worth 1000 words, here's the chart: For what it's worth, here are some of the words:I'm driving 80% short trips (5 miles or less) in a small town, and 20% interstate trips (15 miles or more). The low so far was 19.57mpg on a partial tank in cold weather, all city driving, with lots of idling to warm the car, and the high has been 31.48, when I did 90% interstate driving at 75-85 mph. I've been experimenting with different brands of 87-octane regular gas. No conclusion yet, so almost every tankful is from a different station. It's also time for an oil change.I'm ecstatic. I was driving a 3.1 V6 Pontiac 6000 which was getting ~12-15 in town and ~25-28 on the highway.

My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.

Hey guys and gals,First off, I really appreciate all the responses. I wanna car that gets good gas mileage for a 1.8. 26 is jus pathetic. I will most prolly buy the Cosmo Racing Cold Air Intake. But I will try that first Dave. Thanks for the advice. Inder

it really has nothing to do with your CAI, some of the cars just get lousy mileage, some gets great mileage.I get between 23-27mpg before supercharger, 20-23mpg after supercharger. some tanks (right after I got the supercharger) have been 15-17mpg !! on a long round trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, driving max 75mph and no full throttle, I got 28mpg.one thing you might try is resetting the ECU, it seemed to help my mileage (before supercharger). ECU does learn how you drive and adjust accordingly. BUT what I found is that if you reset the ECU, and drive really slow for 2 tankful, you will get better mileage BUT less power. and vice versa.after my supercharger install (and of course resetting the CPU), the car got gradually faster (using my g-tech pro), up to 1/2 second on 0-60 time, after few tankful of spirited driving.
