Okay, so I have no idea how to make those spiffy lil polls with the bar graphics and all, so I'll do this the old fashion way:What's your poison, manual transmission, or auto? And why one over the other?Me, one day, when my Vibe shows up, it'll be a manual. Why - because it just so much more fun; it's a feeling of command; you can scare that tailgater by downshifting and not hitting your brakes....hjwii

YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

Quote, originally posted by futseal04 »the stock shifter is really notchy.Futseal04, please don't take this as picking on you, but I have to ask what do people mean by "notchy".I have been driving preferrably manual transmissioned vehicles for the last 30 years, and I still don't know what people mean by "notchy".A shifter "throw" should have a "notch" at the point where that gear is engaged. I have read that comment a million times, but I still can't figure out w.t.f. it means.Again, I'm not picking on you in particular......just had to get it out.
Just as a little background, i have owned 9 vehicles, and only 4 of them (99,01 Grand Am, Vibe, and 91 Escort) were autos. The others (74,96 Mustangs, 96 Camaro, 74 Datsun PU, 91 Isuzu PU) were manuals. What i mean is that there is more resistance getting into the gates. The Camaro's was pretty easy to work. The Cobra's was a little "notchier", but not as bad as the Vibe's. It probablly has to do with the shifter being on a cable instead of directy in the transmission, but I just didnt' like the feel of it.

Auto here. Driving stick is fun for about three days. Then it gets old. My Dad's truck and old car are manuals, and everyonce and a while I would have to drive one. In the country they are fine, but when 90% of you driving is in the city it becomes a pain in the (removed).
um... no. as phil experienced last friday as i took him w/ me on my work installs and tech calls, my job is just about ALL city driving. start and stop, start and stop. I LOVE the manual trans and especially FEELING the car shift under my control! what a rush it can be a pain at times, but that's when i'm having to write or talk on the phone while trying to shift. but i try hard NOT to do that.
was planning on a manual, but the dealer had a sweet deal on a base with an auto. turns out i really like the auto, it works well with the engine. and still getting good hiway mileage (34.6 mpg)

Man, I got a SLOW auto. I was actually planning on getting the GT, but then my mom said that she wanted to drive the car too, so I had to get an auto. She hates drivin manuals. O well, my next is definitely gonna be a stick. Inder Singh

I traded in my automatic Vibe for a manual. I discovered I could not stand when the auto shifted...hated the lack of control.I love manual!! I just installed a CAI...so much fun. Never going back to an auto.

Manual (GT!) - and what mileage? I think of it this way. I love the car (even though I don't always get to drive this one). We figure we get to keep it longer than an automatic, since the really dumb thieves won't know how to drive stick!
my first ever manuak, 6 speed GT wahoo!i had a tuff time learning it, being before the vibe i drove alot of automatic cars wth low end power to boot, so the idea of it being ok to 4000 RPMS was a shock to me, but my o my how fun it is, now ive hit 8300 RPMs at 65, i could never force a Automatic to push like that, even though i only will do it in nice weather conditions when its easier onthe engine, and when the engine is already warm i have to say i suck at getting the vibe to get going off the line, i really wanna get under 8 seconds 0-60, but to be honest i havnt even gotten high 8s yet because either i have a wimpy start or the wheels are spinning for atleast a second when i launch, wasting time and rubberi also like being able to shift into first and criuse at 25 with about 5000 RPMs as its really load and annoys this one house on my friends street who for about 2 months now has been reporting "load cars" to the police i have no tickets! im not speeding haha!
