I have been told that skis will stick off the back of a vibe and prevent the hatch from opening all of the way, is this true?

depends on the rack system you are using.

I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure it would. I know that the bike rack has to be mounted with the bikes facing backwards, because it interfere's with the hatch glass. As long as you're very careful opening it, there's nothing to worry about. But if you're a skier, it would be nice to be able to sit in the hatch area and put on the boots.
