A stupid question...

Post by Psychobroker »

Do US citzens need a passport to enter and exit Canada? Since I'm flying to Canada for the first time for the MI meet, I haven't a clue

When I went to Canada in March, all I needed was a valid US driver's license and an original birth certificate with a raised seal. However, I recently applied for a passport just to use to get in and out of canada, because it's easier to use a PP than the BC/DL combo...However, it takes 8-10 weeks to get a passport (so i'm told), so I think you're only safe bet is the DL/BC combo.

Honestly since we have two great countries you don't need a passport but it is helpful. Bro as long as you have documents issued by a gov't agency (drivers license, etc) You won't have a problem. When I travel to the US on pleasure trips I always show mydrivers license, on business trips that's a different story.Enjoy your stay in Canada!EDIT: That is a great site Salsa! put there.Sam

When I went through customs in MTL in March, they were extremely careful looking through my documents because they didn't like that I didn't speak french. No lie.

Well Mike US Customs at Dorval airport always gives me a hard time even though I have the proper documents to work in the US (I have a L1-A Visa)It is because you are a single male travelling, a friend of mine who works in there has told me that.As for the fact they gave you a hard time since you didn't speak French, Canadian Custom officers are all bilingual bro since they are Federal employees.Sam

Your best source of info is your airline. And don't forget to bring a pen on board, you need to fill out a customs clearance card before landing.

Heh, I've crossed the border at Port Huron/Sarnia without even being asked for an ID.And that was after 9/11.

I just applied to get my passport on the 12th of May - I received it 3 business days later. I was told 10 business days to get it. Maybe you'll get yours faster than what they said... although its probably more stringent in the States to get one, I would imagine. My boyfriend travelled to the US for work last year and didn't have a passport - the customs agent grilled him, he said. But his coworker, who did have a passport, wasn't asked a single question!
