I read where everyone call's the vibe gt engine a toyota, But my window sticker reads.2003 VIBE GT1.8 4 CYL SFI DOHC YAMAHA ENG6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSIONCan anyone explain this to me?
welcome to genvibe! glad to have another GT owner here... and i see you will be at the super meet in june! it is the toyota engine that is the same in the corolla's, prisms, celica's, and matrix's. as for the yamaha part, i'm not quite sure how they fit in, possible something w/ building it or parts. i'm sure one of the know all tech guru's can answer that question.
I recall reading that too, now that you mention it.. I think it's Toyota built, but somewhere it was said that Yamaha did some tuning on it..

What Nova wrote is what I have found out as well. Also, the GT engine is not the same as the engine in the Corolla, etc. The GT and the base engine are the same displacement, but are not the same block. The internals are completely different too. The Corolla, base Matrix, base Vibe, and non-GTS Celica use the same engine (1ZZ). The Matrix XRS, Vibe GT, and Celica GTS all use the 2ZZ. Different engines altogether.

trdvibe, Thank you for the welcome and yes I will be at Joesph Pontiac for the meet. I wonder if the "YAMAHA ENG" on the sticker. Means yamaha engineering, instead of yamaha engine. LOLThanks for everyone info!
Yamaha seems to do quite a bit of engine tuning for other automakers.I recall back in the late 80's/early 90's, Yamaha did some of the engine tuning/engineering on the V-6 Taurus SHO's. Those were fun to drive

Nope. That one is all Ford. I know, because my last car had the vanilla-version of the SVT Contour engine.2.5L Duratech V-6. 170hp in the '99 Cougar I had (mine had more because of mods). Little over 200hp in the SVT Contour.

But the 2ZZ is still actually built by Toyota, right? I see Toyota logos all over mine.

its both, toyota owns or did own 40% of yamaha...so the head is designed by yahama, and the block is toyota. yamaha has been designing toyota heads for awhile now, back to the 22r engine in the trucks. hope that helps.
