Changed my oil yesterday, it was pretty black...

I had put Mobil 1 full synthetic in at 3,100 miles and changed it at 9,600. It didn't burn a drop during those 6.5k miles but did look pretty dirty which is why I did it at 6.5k instead of 7.5k like I had planned to go to after the switch to Mobil 1. What sort of oil change intervals are you guys running? I drive my Vibe very much more interested MPG then high performance.

well, i run full synthetic mobile 1 and i'm changing mine about 7.5K miles. no probs as of yet. and so far i've changed it twice. just under 18K miles now.

I've been using Castrol GT-X 5W30, and change it about every 5-6K miles, still comes out as honey colored as it went in. I usually drive more or less geared to calm MPG oriented , but will push towards redline every now and then

I usually do it every 3,000 miles or 3 months. Just because I take it to dealer and have them do it. Bad side= not synthetic.

If you're using M1 in non winter conditions, try the 10w30 in stead of the 5w30. It's much more shear stable (holds its viscosity) than the 5w on an extended interval. It will produce a bit less grunge from viscosity improvers not breaking down. The narrowest viscosity spread that works correctly is always the way to go. The Mobile 5w30 is known for shearing a bit much for a synth.

I don't like to spend a lot of money on oil. I just go to wherever I can get the cheapest one and use that. Of course, I look at the back to make sure it meets that "SL" or higher. If it does, then it works for me. I change mine every 3,000 or so.

I also went with the 5w 30 and found that it was a little darker than when it went in, but not too dark. I am very happy with the performance of the oil.

Yep Mobile 1 is a little dark colored to start with, so it will look darker than other oils when draining. I put alot of hiway miles on my commuter cars and have tried synthetics vs "regular" oil for the past 20 years. I have found little to no mpg improvement and no engine longitivty increases. I believe synthetic oil is better, but not worth the additional cost. The acids, particles and moisture still build up in synthsynthetic oils. Just my opinion.

Unless your engine calls for synthetic, dollar for dollar, you don't win with the investment in synthetics.
