Whats the sound difference between CAI and stock?

Post by fuente2000 »

I just got my Vibe about 3 weeks ago and it's begun it's transformation. As much as I would like to get a SC for it my budget just won't allow it. So I'm opting for a CAI. Either Ingen or K&N, not sure which yet. I've searched the forum for CAI and sound but can't seem to get the answer I'm looking for.I have a couple of questions for the group:1) Which is more beneficial - short ram or regular?2) Pros and cons to Ingen and K&N (other than cost)?3) What can I expect as far as sound? Will it be much louder than the stock intake?4) What can I expect REALISTICALLY as far as increase in HP?Thanks for the help!Alex

i didn't know that k&n made an intake, i though they just made a cone filter...as far as the sound, oh boy! it is much different than stock; it starts as a hiss, then a grumble, then, at about 4500 rms, it roars!the maximum proven gain from the full cai is 8hp for base, and im not sure, but i think 12hp for the gt.hope this helps

man o man... there are like 50 threads about intakes and short ram vs cai, etc. k & n only makes a short ram that i know of, not a full cai if that's what you're looking for.try searching for cai or cold air intakes or short ram, etc... should give you a lot of info and data.

If you temporarily detach the top of your aircleaner assembly as if you were changing the filter and then go for a drive, you'll have a good idea of the audio from a CAI. (Most of us think it's great, but some are not enamoured of "that giant sucking sound"...)PS: Congrats, fuente! As you see, you're the lucky instigator of my one thousandth post! Thanks for helping me achieve my rightful Godhood status! (BTW, this achievement entitles you to absolutely nothing....)

Love the sucking sound, plus the slurp when you shift at higher rpms..have your window rolled down to hear it.

I just pulled my Injen off of mine (trying to sell the Vibe, so I took it off. The intake may be sold, but if it isn't, I'll put it in the f.s. forum in a few days) The sound is worth it alone. I really wouldn't call it a "sucking" sound. Almost like a nice exhaust sound to me. Anyways, the sound is worth the $$ to me alone. I found with my stock intake, sometimes it seemed like it pulled fine, but other times, it seemed like someone was holding their hand over the intake and it was pretty doggy. I'm assuming it was because the stock intake getting warm at times and reducing performance. I installed the cai and it pulled GREAT always. They won't give you 50 more hp, but I'd say realistically around 5 to 10 hp. I was skeptical at first about getting one, but it was the best $$ spent on the Vibe.

OK - OK - OK... you all have sold me! Right now I'm leaning towards the investment of the SC and then the CAI but the $3.5K hurts.Either way I'll go with a CAI whether it's before the SC or after doesn't matter. As soon as this happens I'll post pics. Thanks for all the good advice!Alex

with the TRD ecu that comes w/ the s/c, then yes, a CAI will throw a CEL. but w/ additional engine mgt or fuel mgt ecu, then no... we just talked about that in this thread.

Definitely buy a CAI! If you want to know how it sounds, check out this sound clip I found on Matrixowners.com:http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/c...t.mp3Copy and paste it into your browser because angelfire won't link it.The sound is addicting and you can feel the power gains.Later,
